New Study Of Gay Communities

New Study Of Gay Communities
A Massey University research project is focussing on New Zealand's gay and lesbian communities.

Called Lavender Islands, the project has been launched by openly-gay cabinet minister Chris Carter.

The researchers say it is the first time an in-depth study has been undertaken to look specifically at the gay and lesbian community, as previous studies of the group have been mostly problem-focused, looking at health and social problems

The research will examine everything from personal identities to politics and career choices. It will endeavour to develop a broad understanding of issues such as sexual behaviour, sexual attraction, sexual fantasies and emotional attraction.

Dr Mark Henrickson believes Lavender Islands is the most comprehensive study of the group done to date in New Zealand and expects the findings to be of international significance.

The gay and lesbian population in New Zealand is conservatively estimated to number about 75,000 people.

The researchers want at least 3,000 people to participate in the study.

Hotel Dreams & Indian Born Barons

Hotel Dreams & Indian Born Barons
Today's great American hotel owner is more likely to be named Patel and have roots that extend to the Gujarat state in India, than to be named Trump and lay claim to premier properties in the New York area.

Immigrants from India, almost all with ties to Gujarat in the western part of the country, have become a dominant force in the US hotel industry.

They own about half of the US economy lodging facilities and almost 37 percent of all hotel properties here, according to the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, based in Atlanta.

This means that if a traveler stops at a Days Inn along Interstate 95 on the way to Washington, a Best Western in rural Montana, or a Holiday Inn Express near Dallas, there is about a 50 percent chance the hotel is owned by an individual or the family of an immigrant from India.

"The first group found opportunities in the lodgings industry, more by accident than by design," said Hitesh Bhakta, chairman of the AAHOA at the group's convention held in late April at a suburban Dallas hotel.

Indians from Gujarat started to buy into lower-end US hotels in the 1960s and 1970s, when US immigration laws granted residency for new arrivals who invested about US$10,000 to run a business. The ethnic group now owns about 20,000 hotels - about 1 million rooms - in 50 states.

The paradox

The paradox of our time in history is:

That we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers,

Wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints,

We spend more, but have less,

We buy more, but enjoy it less,

We have bigger houses and smaller families,

More conveniences, but less time,

We have more degrees, but less sense,

More knowledge, but less judgment,

More experts, but less solutions,

More medicines, but less wellness,

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced

our values.

We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate

too often.

We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life.

We’ve added years to life, not life to years.

We’ve been all the way to the moon and back,

but have trouble crossing the street to meet the

new neighbour.

We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner space,

We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul;

We’ve split the atom, but not our prejudice.

We have higher incomes, but lower morals,

We’ve become long on quantity, but short on quality.

Report Card

Eight-year-old Nina brought her report card home from school.
Her marks were good...mostly A's and a couple of B's.

However, her teacher had written across the bottom: "Nina is a
smart little girl, but she has one fault. She talks too much in
school. I have an idea I am going to try, which I think may
break her of the habit."

Nina's dad signed her report card, putting a note on the back:
"Please let me know if your idea works on Nina because I would
like to try it out on her mother."

Pakistan-India trade: will it reduce poverty in the region?

Pakistan-India trade: will it reduce poverty in the region?

According to the Pakistani commerce ministry’s figures, between them, India and Pakistan import and export goods worth $ 200 million every year. Pakistan’s own economic indicators put the figure at around $250 million. Even so, trade between Pakistan and India has registered a gradual increase over the last decade. In 1990 India’s exports to Pakistan were just $135 million and imports were $145 million. In 1998, exports grew to $389 million and imports to $264 million. By 2000-2003, India’s exports to Pakistan have grown to $631 million and imports to $527 million.

Experts agree that great trade potential exists for both if the two sides could focus on each other’s specific needs and capabilities. Pakistan can import Indian iron ore, machinery and steel items, chemicals and dyes, wheat, spices, tea and other products while India can buy cotton yarn and textiles, leather products, surgical instruments, water coolers, papers, vegetables, fruits and other things from Pakistan. Meanwhile, unofficial trade between the two flourishes and is worth US$5 billion, five times the official trade figures. Indian textile machinery, tanneries-equipment, machine tools, and spare parts are often ordered from jakarta, Bangkok, Dubai, Hong Kong or Singapore and then re-exported to Pakistan at a greater cost. If we analyse the region in general, there are few facts that should prove as an eye opener for the economic experts.

Odd News

Chilly Reception For Vodka Ice Cream

A new vodka-flavoured ice cream launched in Australia has provoked an outcry from groups worried it would give children a taste for alcohol.

The booze-flavoured Illicit Vodka Cranberry Magnum ice creams hit the shelves just months after biscuit-maker Arnott's new Tia Maria Tim Tams and Kahlua Slices prompted fears that the liquor-laced biscuits would encourage children to drink.

"These products normalise alcohol and suggest to people that they ought to be thinking about alcohol just about every hour of the day," said Geoff Munro, Community Alcohol Action Network director on Saturday.

"It introduces children to the taste of alcohol at potentially a very early age and I think that should be avoided," he told Australian Associated Press.

Streets, which makes the Magnums now on sale in Victoria state as part of its "vice-cream" range, said the ice creams contained only vodka flavouring and no alcohol.

The firm's marketing general manager David McNeil told the Herald Sun newspaper the ice creams were promoted only to adults. He added that rum and raisin has been a popular ice cream flavour for 30 years.

Dear Shahid Saheb

You discussed with me about the Advisory committee of Pakistan Association.

I have given a thought to the proposal and I believe it is not advisable to create a council without public consultation. You are getting back to Mateen Siddiqui's saga where everything was decided in his house by people of his choice.

I do not want you to repeat the same story and be democratic. I do not agree with the executive council as well whgich has been hijacked by Mateen again.

I will oppose every such move forcefully,

Tauqir
