POLICE AREST

Sudan police arrest models after fashion show

Models present creations at Sudan's first mixed-gender fashion show in the capital Khartoum on Friday. Police arrested more than two dozen people overnight as they emerged from the fashion show. All were later released later but police provided no immediate explanation on why they were arrested, according to media reports. (Reuters)

KHARTOUM: Sudanese police briefly detained more than 20 models, make-up artists and designers after a rare mixed-sex fashion show in Khartoum, participants said on Saturday.

Amateur models taking part in the "Sudanese Next Top Model Fashion Show" told Reuters they were rounded up late on Thursday by Sudan's public order police, a body known for its crackdowns on indecent dress and drinking in the Muslim north.

Police were not available to comment on Thursday's arrests outside a club in the capital's Khartoum 2 district.

All of the detainees were released on Friday but at least six were told to report to the police on Sunday to face unspecified charges, said one participant.

"They came to the club after the show and arrested between 20 and 30 people — not just models, but people doing the make- up, the people who provided the clothes," said the participant, who asked to remain anonymous.

"There was nothing bad about the clothes. There were wedding dresses, traditional Sudanese clothes, suits, clothes from local shops and tobs (traditional Sudanese wraparound dresses)."

Other participants said there had been fashion shows before in Sudan, many of them held in private. But Thursday's event was thought to be one of the first public events to feature male and female models sharing the catwalk

Labour will protect assets

An Email Message From Labour Party

A lot has been written recently about John Key’s conflicting comments on whether to sell KiwiBank. One thing is clear from all the confusion:
Under National our SOEs aren’t safe.
Monday night’s TV3 poll made it pretty clear that an overwhelming majority of Kiwis do not want New Zealand’s State Assets sold off.
John Key’s policy is no asset sales in his first term, so could it all be up for grabs in two years' time?
The day after the Budget Bill English was again caught out telling the truth. The Finance Minister and John Key are all for asset sales.
So let me tell you where I stand on selling State Assets.
I am opposed to privatisation of State Assets and I will reverse any decision National makes in this area which Kiwis overwhelmingly oppose.
Kiwis know where they stand on this issue. We already own KiwiBank. It’s ours; it keeps the Australian banks honest; it retains profits for New Zealanders and Labour intends to keep it that way.

Honesty and Integrity

Labour Party members feel strongly about honesty, integrity and care of public money. These values are fundamental to our Party and our political system.
Controversies in recent days have disappointed a lot of us. We expect all of our people to be faithful to our values. That’s why we have insisted on high standards of transparency and responsibility.
Some tough decisions have been made that show our determination to hold your representatives accountable.
Labour has fronted up to our responsibility, and we want to acknowledge this has not been an easy time for members and supporters.
Now we have to focus on our priority: Working for a Labour Government that’s there for hard-working families; one that cares about people, and about your community.
We want you to know, that’s what we’re getting stuck into.
Regards,
Phil Goff, Labour Leader and Andrew Little, Party President

Budget GST increase sows first bitter seeds

The Government’s insistence on raising GST has clearly fed into today’s rise in the Official Cash Rate, and there’s more pressure to come on most Kiwis, says Labour’s Finance spokesman David Cunliffe.
David Cunliffe said Reserve Bank Governor Dr Alan Bollard was left with little choice but to make Kiwi homeowners and businesses pay higher interest rates.
Dr Bollard noted to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee today that the tax package had added to short term stimulus, David Cunliffe said.
“Earlier today, however, Finance Minister Bill English also appeared before the Committee and attempted to maintain the myth that his tax cuts will leave most Kiwis better off after the GST increase.
“The Budget documents do not support that. The inflationary surge of nearly 6 percent does not simply disappear. Because wage increases will remain limited, it will take four years before the average-income Kiwi starts to actually get ahead.
"Bill English could not rebut the mathematics that once inflation effects are added to the tax switch, the average Kiwi wage earner is $30 per week worse off,” David Cunliffe said.
“That is also a best-prospects forecast. Some local bodies are already increasing their rates by near double figures. That’s before the October 1 GST increase adds to rate burdens.
David Cunliffe said it is little wonder that at today’s FEC meeting Bill English floated privatising New Zealand Post and Television New Zealand.
“Having put the country into hock to pay for tax cuts favouring the wealthiest at the expense of low-income and average-income Kiwis, Mr English is scrambling around trying to find a way to balance the ledger.
“Such sales, almost inevitably to overseas buyers, will simply add to our current account deficit. The gap between what we earn and spend as a nation will more than double,” David Cunliffe said. “That gap will also help continue to push up interest rates as we borrow overseas to meet the difference.”
David Cunliffe said today’s interest rate rise is the first of some bitter seeds sown by the Budget for most New Zealanders.

National's tax swindle Budget

National called their budget a "tax switch". Actually it's a tax swindle.
National's tax cuts make New Zealand less fair - the only real winners from this budget were the very highest income earners. I'm writing to ask you to consider making a donation to Labour so that we can continue the fight for fairer tax and a fairer society.
          Fairness matters.
It's not fair that the vast bulk of Kiwis are going to be paying higher GST and higher prices so that the wealthiest New Zealanders can get huge tax reductions. It's not fair that fifteen per cent of National's tax cuts goes to the top 1% of earners.
National's Cabinet Ministers get around $140 extra a week - compared to only $3 a week for those on the minimum wage.
          We don’t think that's fair.
National has gone to great lengths to hide this unfairness by claiming that no one is made worse off. But that's not true either. Most New Zealanders’ tax cuts will be wiped out by 6% inflation before they even get to the check out. Here's what that means:
With such a large inflation rise a person on the average wage will end up paying $45 more each week for the same goods and services.
If you're on the average wage, in total, you'll be $30 a week worse off under this budget.
Someone on $70,000 will be $45 a week worse off after inflation.
That's bad enough, but to add insult to injury, National has funded its tax swindle by massive increases to borrowing. And we all know that borrowing for tax cuts just doesn't make sense - it's economically reckless.
But it didn't have to be like this.
National had the opportunity to deliver a Budget that was fair to all Kiwis. A Budget for the many not the few. But they didn’t. They had the chance to produce a Budget that invested in the future. A Budget that promoted a modern, smart economy with better jobs and higher wages. But they didn’t.
Zubair, if you care about making New Zealand a fairer place might you consider making a donation to Labour? You can make a secure online donation here. The election campaign is less than 18 months away and our opponents will be better funded than ever.
Your donation will be put to good use - fighting for fairness against an opponent who has given the wealthiest a windfall - a windfall paid for by increasing costs on hardworking Kiwi families whose budgets are already stretched.
Thank you again for your support.
Kind regards,
Chris Flatt
General Secretary, New Zealand Labour Party
PS. National's tax swindle budget was about the few rather than the many. Can you help Labour fight for fairness and make a secure online donation right now? Every dollar counts as we build towards the campaign.
