‘SLASH AND BURN’

NATIONAL’S ‘SLASH AND BURN’ PLAN WILL HIT MIDDLE AND LOW INCOME KIWIS
The news that the Government is planning to axe even more jobs in the public service is further evidence that National’s only plan for this economy is to slash and burn.
We’ve heard Bill English and John Key blaming the Canterbury earthquake for the fact our economy is in trouble. That’s not true. The economy was going backwards under National long before the quake hit on February 22.
The Government is just using the disaster as an excuse to take the hatchet to programmes like Working for Families, Kiwisaver and interest-free student loans which they didn’t really support but promised before the election not to cut. That’s the absolute wrong approach to take. Why would you hammer middle and low income families in tough economic times, when they’re already struggling to pay the bills?
John Key claims he’ll only trim money from those at the top end who are receiving Working for Families. But to make any real savings, he would need to cut payments to couples where the combined household income is probably around $80,000 and that’s the equivalent of two people earning less than the average wage each, while supporting children. Why is he hammering middle New Zealand while he continues to hold on to tax cuts of $1000 a week to people on his income band?
If savings really have to be made, surely those on the top incomes who got huge windfall gains from October tax cuts could give some of that back. Clearly the economy couldn’t afford National’s tax cuts for the wealthy. If you want to get the economy going, helping middle and low income people struggling to make ends meet, not further cutting their incomes, would be a good place to start. As BERL economist Ganesh Nana says slash and burn will just push New Zealand further into recession.

PK flood relief

Please find the PK flood relief donation’s receipt and a letter attached for the community's attention and especially to satisfy those who did not contribute in this event, except spreading rumors and suspecting others good deeds and sincerity. Donations were counted on the spot (on Chand Ratt) by two very honest organizers in front of dozens of community members. Thanks to Sohni Dharti for keeping the community’s records straight, and providing a platform where hard working community workers can prove their honesty. Atiya Syed

        Assalam-o-Alykum
Attached is a letter and receipt that I received from Pakistan Red Crescent Society.
Please note: on the event of Chand Raat we were able to raise NZD1300.00 and money were converted to USD before sending to Pakistan Red Crescent.

Our elders our responsibility

Bhartiya Samaj endeavors to consider setting up a rest home specially designed to nurture South Asian communities.
We intend to fulfil the cultural needs of our respected Elders which seems to be missing in the existing Rest Homes.
Doctors, Nurses and Caregivers will be available who shall be able to understand your language and deal with your respective cultural values. Home cooked food will be provided and served in the rest home.  An assurance will be given that there shall be no lack of companionship and communication as the most common language shall be used so that understanding each other does not create an issue. They will be entertained with the installation of the popular Indian TV (Vision Asia) , movies etc.
Arrangements to visit the Temples, Gurudwaras, Mosques or Churches will be made to get there on regular weekly basis. They would not miss out on popular festivals as arrangement will be made for them to participate. In a nut shell this will be another home away from home. Please remember, this project is not for today or tomorrow but it will cater to our future.
Vision:
NEW ZEALAND Residents of South East Asian community will have an access to old age homes which are developed with absolute sensitivity to our culture and are designed to provide emotionally nurturing, culturally sensitive, linguistically encouraging and medically safe environment.
Mission:
Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust will consult, collaborate, initiate and support the process of brainstorming on the future of old age nurturing, for our community in New Zealand.
Theme:
Our community by enlarge demonstrates great sensitivity towards their old people and always has attempted to provide their best for them within available means. We as immigrant experience huge dynamic transformations in our means, life style, professional and occupational challenges which constantly limits our capability to perform as a care giver. However we continue to strive hard not to leave any stone unturned to provide the best for our elders.
Context:
It is funny how everyone wants to live long but no one wants to grow old. Old age is viewed as an unavoidable, undesirable, problem-ridden phase of life that we all are compelled to live, marking time until our final exit from life itself.
Perceiving old age with fear is actually a rather recent phenomenon. It seems to increase as each day passes and the world become more complex and less comprehensible. Old age care has become even bigger challenge with our youngsters living in complex times.

Collective Donation for the Christchurch Earthquake

Dear fellow Pakistani,

The recent tragedy of Christchurch earthquake is weighing heavily on our minds, especially, on the residents of Christchurch, who suffered this calamity.

2.                     Various expatriate communities living in New Zealand have taken upon themselves to raise funds for the affected families and show their solidarity with the local community at this grave situation. Such gestures, go a long way in developing better understanding and recognition that how much the fellow immigrants care about their fellow citizens.

3.                     I would again urge all our Pakistani-Kiwi community members to please realize the enormity of the disaster and make collective efforts for donation as a community which may be handed over collectively on behalf of the entire community, at one place.

4.                     I expect that any one community based organization will step forward and take this responsibility. Alternatively, if necessary, the High Commission, will also be happy to facilitate endeavours in this regard.

Kind regards,

(Syed Ibne Abbas)

Precautionary Measures

Dear fellow Pakistani,

Wellingtonians are aware that after the devastating earthquake of Christchurch, Wellington was struck twice by fairly large tremors during the last week i.e. 4.7 and 4.5 respectively, on Richter scale.

2.                     This situation has necessitated that all the community members should take some precautionary measures as advised by the Ministry of Civil Defence, Wellington Region Emergency Management Group, for the safety and security of their families and loved ones.

3.                     Following additional measures may also please be considered:

-                     Each family may inform of their contacts, telephones (landline and cell) email and residential addresses to the High Commission; and

-                     Every family may please create a network with their friends, neighbours or office colleagues whom in case of any emergency, they may check on each others welfare.

4.                     These measures are essential because in an unfortunate situation, the loved ones of expatriate community in Pakistan expects the High Commission to inform them about the welfare of their family members, if they can not reach them directly.  In absence, of the requisite details, the High Commission is unable to provide the assistance.  Recently, after the Christchurch earthquake, we were asked to provide information about a person who was untraceable.. We were able to find him with the help of local authorities and luckily he is fine.

5..                     After the Christchurch earthquake, I personally called every Pakistani there, whose telephone contact is available in the High Commission to enquire about their welfare. In cases, where telephone numbers were not available, we tried to send emails, requesting every member of the community to inform us about their welfare.

6.                     I would appreciate that all the recipients of this email should share my message amongst other members who are not on our mailing list, so that we could compile contact details database of all community members.

Kind regards,
(Syed Ibne Abbas)

Dr Choudhary commends the Auckland based radio station, Radio Apna 990

02 March 2011Media Statement

Support for devastated ethnic communities in Christchurch must continue
Labour’s Ethnic Affairs associate spokesperson Dr Ashraf Choudhary is urging ethnic communities throughout the country to continue supporting those living in the devastated Canterbury region who need assistance.
Dr Choudhary visited several of the worst hit suburbs of Christchurch earlier this week.  He says the Sikh Temple and community centre in Sydenham has been destroyed and the Indian community Hall in Phillips town and Hare Krishna Temple in Richmond have suffered significant damage.
“The Sikh community has appealed for help to have access to temporary buildings for community gatherings and for long-term help to rebuild these centres,” said Dr Choudhary.
The MP also met with members of the Christchurch Indian Association who said a significant number of its businesses and homes were in ruins after the quake.
“The Muslim leaders of Pakistani and Somalian community have been providing significant contribution in terms of hosting and feeding large numbers of displaced families at the local Mosque in Deans Ave, opposite Hagley Park. Many were also contributing to cleaning up the liquefaction in the area,” he said.
Dr Choudhary commends the Auckland based radio station, Radio Apna 990, for collecting over a hundred thousand dollars in a recent Radiothon for Christchurch.
“The Muslim community in Auckland is also hosting a number of displaced people from Christchurch,” he said.
“The support for members of ethnic communities caught up in this tragedy has been tremendous so far. We thank everyone for their efforts. It’s important that the assistance continues as the region begins the long process of rebuilding.”
