Pakistan traditional music

Pakistan Association of New Zealand is working on a project of providing Pakistan traditional music to Auckland Central Library and selective suburban libraries so that we might be differentiated with separate geographical identity in South Asian Music that otherwise is referred to as Indian Music in general terms. We are already in middle of the project and have gathered a sufficient collection of Pakistan Music that includes all aspects of classical instrumental and vocal strands. This heritage project needs generous funding from individuals who consider Pak music to be appreciated in wider spheres of international music. The estimated cost for this project amounts to NZ$400.Please send your donations in name of “Pakistan Association of New Zealand” and be a source of promoting the music you enjoy most.

Citizenship

Dear Friends,

The Labour Party, supported by NZ First and National, is proposing a new law that will make it harder for new immigrants to become New Zealand Citizens.

1. Citizenship after 5 years residence, not 3 as now.

2. Time in NZ on temporary permit will not count for citizenship.

3. Marriage to NZ citizen will not mean shorter period for Citizenship.

4. Childern for non-citizens not entitled to citizenship (this clause was dropped but now being considered)

5. SIS (Special Investigating Services) can recommended withdrawal of passport.

 

These proposals are unjust for all New Zealanders.

Hello PANZ,

I heard the news of Mrs Mehmood, who passed away in Australia. I request PANZ to organise Quran Khawani and one page writeup on the efforts, she did for the betterment of PAKISTANI COMMUNITY.  She and her husband played a big role in the history of PANZ. Please give her recognition and if you don't know who she was, ask executives or their elders.

Police Ethnic Strategy

Pakistan Association of New Zealand participated in Consultation Meeting regarding Police Ethnic Strategy on held in Fickling Convention Center Three Kings on 16 June 2004. The briefing from relevant Police Officials started with a detailed introduction of the strategy, its objectives and long term planning. Q & A session included the active involvement of the participants with respect to questioning and analyzing of the strategy. Pakistan Association officials also raised few questions related to language difficulties while being in victimized positions. The question of short term policy was also raised as the under discussion strategy is expected to be in practice by 2008.PANZ delegation included PANZ President Shahid Azad and Vice President Kashif Chaudhry. Later on PANZ had useful discussion with Jessica Phuang Asian Liaison Officer of Auckland Police and got a detailed response regarding the arrest of over-stayers and subsequent difficulties in meeting them. PANZ also met with the officials of Ethnic Affairs Office people present in the meeting and invited them to 14 August 2004 function which they graciously accepted. The attendance of such meetings is a part of PANZ ongoing campaign to become more active and involved in multicultural environment and bring a good name to Pak community in eyes of Government offices and ethnic communities.

Farrukh Rashid a Pakistani national had died in first week of September 1993 when a car hit him on Ponsonby Road Auckland. Pakistan Association of New Zealand had made funeral arrangement and sent the body back to Pakistan. We also dealt with the recovery of the deceased estate on behalf of Farrukh parents when they asked us to act on their behalf and do the legal proceeding. The main aim was to send all the money and valuables of Farrukh back to his family so that financial strain arising out of the death of Farrukh might be lessened. Pakistan Association also remained involved with Police investigation and court processing of the case as well. Now all the relevant phases have been completed.

 

We are quite satisfied and relieved that after going through a long processing in Government and High Court offices, PANZ finally managed to transfer a sum of NZ$ 47129.91 on 18 June 2004 to the account of Farrukh`s mother living in Quetta, Pakistan. This may also be noted that PANZ had also sent a modest amount of NZ1000$ in December 2003 to the deceased family as well. The legal processing was done by a well-known Legal Firm for we wanted to keep every thing crystal clear. We also made Farrukh`s family to remain in contact with their lawyers directly so that no confusion may remain in between. This is to note that PANZ didn`t charge a single penny for all this effort.Though Farrukh left a good amount of money, a joint meeting of PANZ General & Executive Committee held few weeks back decided not to deduct even a penny from his account to cover the expenses done by us regarding his funeral and body transportation.

 

On the other hand Court has also sentenced the woman who had hit Farrukh and caused his death.Her License has been suspended for six months while she has also been fined NZ1500$ for careless driving though no amount has yet been paid. Its pity that punishment seems trivial and sorrowful if compared to the loss of a precious life. Our request for a copy of the complete court decision is still with the relevant authorities. Pakistan Association of New Zealand had submitted the following statement in the court as well.

“As an office bearer of Pakistan Association of New Zealand I am dealing with the family of Farrukh Rashid from his death day to date and am well aware of all the pain and emotional discomfort they have undergone. I reached in Auckland hospital as soon as I got the news of Farrukh accident and was told he had already expired. This was a difficult task to convey the news of his death to his family as family is real strong and emotional in Pakistan like societies. He had an aged mother, a sister and a younger brother back in his family. However gradually I made them aware of the fact that Farrukh is no more in this world. This was shocking and unbearable for them as the news was sudden and unexpected. After long struggle of getting his permanent residence in New Zealand successfully only few months back, Farrukh was planning to visit his country and family after many years. Every body in the family was waiting for his return and it was planned that he will also get married during this trip. He was especially closely attached to his mother and long years away from her had added more vigour in him to meet her. A look at his telephone bills clearly indicates he was calling his family almost thrice a week and was very keen to see them all. In background of this his sudden death has an appalling affect on his family members. In those early days of his death it was really quite hard to listen to the weeping voices from other side of the telephone line and no words and sympathy from my side seemed to lessen the pain of the family members. It seemed I myself had become a part of this tragedy and that how devastating after-effects a family has to face in case of death around them. Farrukh father had died back in early 70`s and he was also a father-figure of the remaining family in terms of relations and finance. The absence of this double role from family has caused a psychological void in lives of all the remaining family members. Farrukh`s sister usually tells me the condition of her mother after the death of Farrukh and it is painful. She hardly talks to any body and keeps sobbing most of the time in remembrance of her son. I find no words to express the pain and anguish Farukh family has face after his death. It is something you can feel from their every word. The family is also quite ken to know the outcome of the accident case as they want the law to deal with careless driver strictly so that dear and near ones of others might escape from their negligence and carelessness.

 

As already stated above Farrukh was main source of income for his family and their livelihood depended upon what he was sending them from here. His younger brother Tahir Rashid works as clerk in an office and wages in Pakistan are too low to accommodate the basic needs of life. This has thrown the family in financial crisis and they are finding it difficult to cope with  the living costs. Unfortunately Farrukh`s death has also led them to financial problems apart from dealing the emotional impacts of his death. Pakistan Association of New Zealand is voluntary organization that works for the settlement as well betterment of Pak community living in New Zealand. We also deal with death tragedies that occur in our community circle. In cases where the individual’s family is living in Pakistan we make arrangements for sending the dead body back to his home as parents usually ask for it.  In Farrukh`s case we took control of the procedding from the day of his death and are still in contact with his family regarding certain things that relate to him. Pakistan Association of New Zealand spent approximately 5000-6000 Dollars on transporting his dead body back to his native city in Pakistan. This tragedy has also caused a financial stress on our organization as we have limited funding sources and are wholly dependent on donations. Our organization is not supported by any business but by volunteers who have passion for community welfare and collective progress.

 

As a community representative I am in contact with Farrukh family n regular basis and keep calling them. I honestly feel that they have not yet come out of the emotional harm and mental pain caused by Farrukh`s death even after months of this tragedy. His mother is totally lost in his memories and start weeping even now while rest of the family members are also missing him badly. It seems Farrukh is still part of their life though in a painful way. The economic aspects are most crucial and family is forced to adopt a low-level living after his death…..Shahid Azad “

After long flight toward north he started feeling cold for which he was after and happy too. Here comes the manure collator, she found tiny sparrow in there took him with her give warm bath, put him in front of fan heater. Resignation of PANZ President

Due to my personal commitment in Pakistan I am unable to come and serve the Pakistani community in New Zealand therefore I am submitting my resignation from the position of The President of Pakistan Association of New Zealand.

Therefore it is requested that please accept my resignation with effect from 1 June 2004.

Arts and Literature”

Pakistan Association of New Zealand is holding “An Evening of Arts and Literature” on 4 July 2004 at 3pm. The programme includes Mushaira, and Dress Show for Children along with music, dance and skits. Like last year Mushaira, a part of this programme will be funded by Creative Communities (Auckland City Council). Pakistan Association of New Zealand is quite proud of the fact that until now three of our projects has been funded by Auckland City Council, something that has always been neglected in the past. We thank God that due to hectic efforts of Pakistan Association of New Zealand today all of us proudly stand in line of known ethnic communities are no more nameless people any more. We are thankful to City Council for putting trust in out activities and programmes.

 

Mushaira section of the programme will feature local poets and rendering of their poetry. Poets who are interested in reciting their poetry on the programme day please contact PANZ by any means of communication including email and telephone well in time. Children Dress Show will involve different provincial and national dresses of Pakistan. Families that are interested to see their childrens on the stage in colorful Pakistani dresses should contact us immediately. Ladies can contact members of woman council for further details and mutual discussion.

 

Programme attendants will be able to enjoy the Food Stalls on payment. Drinks will be served by Pakistan Association of New Zealand. 

 

A meeting of Pakistan association of New Zealand was held on 7 January to work out details of the programme and final decisions were taken in this regard.

Woodcutter

Once upon a time, there was a very strong woodcutter. He asked for
a job from a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good
and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was
determined to do his best. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter brought down 18
trees. The Boss was very much impressed and said, "Congratulations, Go
on that way!" Very motivated by the words of the boss, the woodcutter
tried harder the next day, but he only could bring down 15 trees.
The third day he tried even harder, but he only could bring down 10
trees. Day after day he was bringing down less and less trees. "I must
be losing my strength", the woodcutter thought to himself. He went to the
boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.
"When was the last time you sharpened your! axe?" the boss asked.
"Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my! axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees.

PANZ President and VP

The general committee Pakistan Association of New Zealand held its special meeting on 28 May 2003 to discuss the resignation of PANZ President Tanveer Syed who had tendered his resignation on 25 May 2003 due to his inability of returning back to New Zealand in near future. Tanveer Syed has got employed with a multi-national company in Islamabad and has decided to settle there. The meeting discussed in details the possible solutions and decided to take the issue to Executive Council PANZ. Resultantly a joint meeting of General and Executive Committee was held on 30 May 2004 where the recommendations of general committee were put before the Executive Committee for final approval. The meeting was attended by all cabinet members and the two executives.

It was decided in mutual consent to appoint Shahid Azad as the new president of the organization for the remaining period of current PANZ. Shahid Azad had already been discharging the responsibility of acting president for the last four months. The cabinet members also appointed Kashif  Chaudhry  as its new Vice President with immediate effect. The appointment stands for the interim period that lasts until the present term of the association. The Executive Committee approved the decisions made by general committee and accepted the resignation of Tanveer Syed.The meeting also discussed some other issues and a broad consensus was found on each and every  issue. The issue of forthcoming PANZ election in November 2004 was also discussed and organization new president made it clear in categorical terms that elections would be held right in the specified time and no delay whatsoever on part of General Committee can occur in this respect. He said that PANZ General Committee does not want even a single day delay in discharging all relevant constitutional requirements and democratic obligations in transfer of power. General Committee appreciated the members of Executive Committee for their continued cooperation in running PANZ affairs.

 

In a separate meeting of PANZ on the following day the members appreciated the services of outgoing president Tanveer Syed who spearheaded PANZ to new achievements and milestones and wished him best for his life and profession in Pakistan. PANZ President gave an overview of the ongoing and coming activities and stressed the need of being more mobile and team focused as PANZ sphere of activities has increased in volume over the past one year.  The meeting also finalized the activity schedule of June and July and the Big Day (14 August 2004).
