SUICIDE
Pakistani engineer’s suicide shocks expat community
ALKHOBAR: The suspected suicide on Friday of a middle-aged Pakistani civil engineer has shocked the Eastern Province expatriate community.
Pakistani community elders described Faqir Hussain as a well-qualified, good natured and pious man. He was in his mid-40s and was a graduate of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) in Lahore.
The reason behind Hussain’s decision to take his own life is unclear and is under investigation. A family man, he was a father of three sons, two of whom are pursuing higher studies in Pakistan. The third is enrolled in a local school.
Hussain’s wife is a homemaker and, according to those who are in touch with her, is in a state of extreme shock. Hussain and his family have been in the Kingdom for more than seven years and have a large circle of friends.
The Embassy of Pakistan in Riyadh is closely following the case and Welfare Counselor Dr. Kazim Niaz told Arab News that it would extend all possible help to the family.
The embassy’s legal representative in Alkhobar, Abdul Ghaffar, told Arab News that Hussain was an employee of Al-Tuwairqi Holding Co.
“An authorized Al-Tuwairqi employee, Ayub Qureshi, informed us on Tuesday that Hussain had inflicted grievous injuries himself with a sharp-edged knife on Friday immediately after noon prayers. He was rushed to the government hospital in Alkhobar where doctors described his condition as critical because of massive bleeding. A couple of hours later he died,” said Abdul Ghaffar. “This is what the Al-Tuwairqi employee told me,” he clarified.
The body was later moved to the morgue in Dammam Central Hospital.
Alkhobar police are investigating the case but have not issued any official statement so far. They are in touch with the deceased man’s employers.
Alkhobar is home to a large number of Pakistani expatriates. According to unofficial estimates, of the 1.5 million Pakistanis in the Kingdom, nearly 350,000 of them are in the Eastern Province.
One particular district in Alkhobar surrounding the Pakistan International School is described as mini-Pakistan and Hussain and his family lived in the area near Apna Bazaar.

FORGER ARRESTED
Degree forger arrested
By RIMA AL-MUKHTAR
JEDDAH: Police arrested on Friday an Arab man who would forge and sell MA and Ph.D. certificates from reputable foreign universities.
“An undercover policeman was assigned to investigate the matter. The policeman approached the forger pretending he wanted to buy a certificate,” Al-Madinah daily quoted Col. Misfer Al-Juaid, spokesman for Jeddah police, as saying.
He said the man would charge up to SR10,000 per certificate.
Police also searched the man’s home and found a computer that he would use to make the certificates, lists of the names of foreign universities, and dozens of fake certificates that had been stamped and signed but did not have any names on them.
“The forger was a professional. He could hack the computers of these universities and print out fake certificates,” said Al-Juaid.
On questioning, the man confessed to making fake certificates and charging people according to what type of certificate they wanted and the subject of the degree.
“The case has been transferred to the anti-counterfeiting department for further investigation,” said Al-Juaid.

Salaam
I know it has been a while but I was trying to organise an expert to come and talk to us about managing public relations. I have found such an expert and an extremely skilled person who will be able to draw upon her knowledge and her experience in NZ media and give us practical models of how to handle publicity. She will join us, like the last time, for only a part of the discussion. I am hoping that with this meeting we can formulate a media response strategy or at least the beginings of one.
This work is looking very positive, and we can build on it to counter the negative impact of stereotyping. I am also hoping to include youth to be part of this conversation especially those that are interested in the media so please pass this invite on to any that you know of.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

DR ASHRAF CHOUDHARY’S UPDATE
The United Nations has selected 21 March to symbolise the need to end racism in response to the fatal shootings of 70 anti-apartheid demonstrators at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, on 21 March 1960.
Identifying a day specifically for this purpose reflected the world’s concern to heighten awareness of the harmful effects of racism.
The theme for Race Relations Day 2010 is ‘It’s About Us – Whānau’. It is a time for all New Zealanders to acknowledge and celebrate the cultural diversity of our people on this day. Race Relations Day is being celebrated by community groups, councils, schools, workplaces, marae and places of worship. People are encouraged to host events and celebrations to acknowledge the value of cultural diversity and the need to support harmonious race relations.
We also need to launch new initiatives, motivate our family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to promote diversity.
I have had the opportunity over the last three weeks to attend many such events throughout the country.
We in the Labour Party take pride in emphasising the importance of our commitment to fostering respect, equality and multicultural diversity within New Zealand.
Auckland supper city?
Modern New Zealand is made up of people who have migrated from every part of the globe. Auckland is a particularly multi-ethnic city, where people can enjoy the energy and vitality that migrants have bought from the Pacific, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America and Europe.
This multi-ethnic community has evolved in the past 30 years. One of the challenges faced by Labour when we came into office in 1999 was that some of the newer migrant communities, particularly from the Middle East and Asia, did not feel valued or accepted in the wider Auckland and New Zealand community.
Giving people a chance to play an active role in the wider community was a high priority for the Labour Government. One of the positive developments that we saw at local and whole-of-country level was the development of Ethnic Advisory Boards, the Asia:NZ Foundation, and the appointment of Hon Sir Anand Satyanand as our Governor General.
One of the concerns that I have, as Labour’s senior Ethnic Affairs Spokesperson, is that the establishment of the new Auckland “Super City” will see the disappearance of valuable structures like the Waitakere Ethnic Board and similar organisations operating elsewhere in the Auckland region that give migrant communities a voice.
My colleagues Dr Ashraf Choudhary, Dr Rajen Prasad and Raymond Huo have been asking National’s Ethnic Affairs Minister Pansy Wong what she has been doing to ensure that Auckland’s diverse communities have opportunities to have their say and make their contribution to the Auckland “Super City.” We are still waiting for the Minister’s reply!
Auckland would be a poorer place if we couldn’t all enjoy the diversity that our city now reflects. I hope that the new “Super City” continues to provide a voice for all its people.
