    SALT RANGE

    The Salt Range runs from Jhelum city on the G.T. Road and west to Mianwali and Kalabagh along the Indus River. There are many places of historical and archaeological interest in the Salt Range. Salt Range seems to have formed part of a powerful Hindu Kingdom of Kashmir in 10th century AD. Most of the forts and temples concentrated in and around the Salt Range date from that period. Mahmud of Ghazni, in the early eleventh century and Mughal Emperor Babur in the 16th century visited the area after their invasion of the sub-continent. The Janjua tribe, the most important in the central parts of the Range, were then converted to Islam.

    A friendly cricket match

    A friendly cricket match was played between Auckland and Hamilton Pakiwis on 15 May 2004. Pakistan Association of New Zealand was invited to visit Hamilton few days back by newly formed Pak Organization there .It was decided that a friendly match between both the cities will be a fitting start for mutual interaction and cooperation. A cricket team consisting of young cricketers from Auckland along with few PANZ officials reached Hamilton on 15 May and played a 20 over hard ball cricket match with young guns of Hamilton Pakistanis. Auckland outfit was warmly welcomed by Ch. Javeid (Tandoor Pakistan Restaurant) and Taqi and Shahzad Sahib and lot of other local Pak people.

    Auckland team won the toss and put Hamilton to bat first. The match started at slow pace with Hamilton guys losing few wickets in the first 10 overs. However their middle order stabilized the situation and succeeded in taking the score to a respectable total of 120 runs in 20 overs. Awaiz took 3 wickets while Tauseef and Sheeraz bagged two wickets each from Auckland side. PANZ Auckland team started their run chase at a disappointing note when their early batsmen could not score many runs and got out in regular intervals of time. Sheeraz turned the tables upon Hamilton team by hitting powerful 43 runs in a fiery style and was ably supported by resolute Imran. Auckland team needed 21 runs in last four overs which they managed to score with ease helped by a good knock from Awaiz Shahzad. Imran, Taussef and Shahid Azad did extremely well in the dying stage and Auckland team won the match by 3 wickets.

    Pakistan Association Hamilton had arranged a BBQ during the match which every body continued enjoying all the day. Players of both the teams mingled with each other and a fraternal atmosphere remained in place all the times. Pakistan Association of New Zealand thanks for the hospitality and warm welcome given to them by Hamilton Pakistanis and assure them of working closely with regard to planning and participation for mutual programmes.

    new General Secretary

    Pakistan Association of New Zealand has appointed Mr. Haroon Ahmed as its new General Secretary with immediate effect. This portfolio was vacant since the resignation of Khurram from the same post some months ago. In light of PANZ constitution clause 5(e) Pakistan Association had nominated Mr. Haroon Ahmed as its new General Secretary in its monthly meeting held on 15 April 2004. The decision was forwarded to PANZ Executive Committee for the final approval that we have got on 15 May 2004. We welcome Mr. Haroon Ahmed in our fold and hope his inclusion will help in sharing the work-load and team performance.

    Haroon Ahmed holds Masters in Business Administration with distinction. Currently he is studying in Auckland University of Technology.

    Pakistani Driver Attacked By two Men

    A Pak community member Mr. Zafar Gondal was physically attacked by two men after they hired his taxi. Zafar Gondal is a driver in Co-Op Taxi and earns his living by the same. On night of 7 May 2004 at around 10:30 pm when he was intending to come back to the city after dropping some passengers in Lynnfield area, two guys waved him to stop while he was passing by Mt. Roskill shops. They asked him to take them to Mt. Roskill Road and then to another no- exit street where they were intending to picnic some of their friend and then head towards Avondale area. But when the man on the front seat got out of the car and started moving around drivers seat, the man sitting on the back struck something on Zafar`s head. Zafar says he does not know what happened to him afterwards. After beating him severely on the head, face and other parts of the body, they threw him out of the car close to James Preston Ave in Mt. Roskill. The assailants took away his car that was found in Mangere area the next day. While Zafar lied unconscious on the road, some passerby informed the police and an ambulance took him away to Middle More Hospital. His hand fingers are broken almost in pieces and one of his ears went under plastic surgery as it was almost torn apart in the beating.”

    Pakistan Association of New Zealand remained in contact with Zafar soon after the incident and after mutual discussion it was decided in principal to take the issue to media in an attempt to stop the violent behavior of passengers that seems to have no apparent reason except criminal intent. We are thankful to Mr. Gondal for his courageous decision of agreeing to highlight the issue while in most of the cases drivers tend to ignore the incident in disappointment. Pakistan Association acting president Mr. Shahid Azad contacted NZ Herald, suburban and ethnic newspapers and discussed the importance of the issue and ongoing assault on taxi drivers. Central Leader Editorial Section agreed to cover the story which has already been published on 14 May issue on the front page. We are thankful to Esther Harward for understanding the issue in right perspective and giving a due coverage of the incident. Some other newspapers are also going to take the issue. This will be good idea if some of the drivers write to NZ Herald section of Letter to the Editor and express their dismay at the situation.

    We are primarily concerned that numbers of such incidents have happened with drivers of Pakistani origin over the past year or so and they go unnoticed for many reasons. Though we feel a strong body consisting of taxi drivers is the exact forum for speaking about their rights, we also advise our Pak taxi drivers to inform us of any such incident if they unfortunately face one. They will surely find a helping hand from our side in speaking for their plight. Presently we are making a summary of such physical beatings suffered by Pakistani drivers in the last year. We request all of you to inform us of any such incident since this will help in pleading the assault case in best of manner.

    Pakistan Association of New Zealand expresses its deep regret at assault on Zafar. We are more concerned of the fact that this was second reported incident of physical assault on taxi drivers in Mt. Roskill area for the last few months. Such incidents involving physical assault on taxi drivers seem planned and needs to be investigated in full by relevant authorities. We also believe that violent behaviors should not go unnoticed since they can prove fatal and become systematic if ignored.

    multicultural programme on tv

    Because of excellent presentation and performance of Pakistan Association of New Zealand in recently held Multi-ethnic Food and Cultural Festival, a local television management has invited PANZ to be a part of a multicultural programme that would be recorded in coming few weeks and would be shown on Triangle later on .This programme will also feature other ethnic communities with primary focus on South-Asian origin. We have committed ourselves in dance and singing categories for this programme and will enter the preparatory stage immediately.

    We are quite grateful that because of our hectic efforts Pakiwis have started making their way into media and other wider ethnic forums. There is a need to be at the top in terms of professionalism and artistry at such places as lot of other communities also comes to participate and spirit is always competitive.

    We invite all those who have a talent to excel and want to join our dance or singing troupe to come forward and register themselves with us. This opportunity will bring recognition and name both to you and your community and therefore should not go waste. We have already planned a schedule and will start practicing and rehearsing in coming days. We are especially looking for brothers from NWFP, Blochistan and Sindh who need to come forward and be a part of efforts.

    Please call us as soon as possible if you are interested in the above.

    CREATION OF GOD

    CREATION OF GOD

    God created the donkey and said to him.
    "You will be a donkey. You will work un-tiringly from sunrise to sunset
    carrying burdens on your back. You will eat grass, you will have no intelligence and you will live 50 years."
    The donkey answered:
    "I will be a donkey, but to live 50 years is much. Give me only 20 years"
    God granted his wish.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    God created the dog and said to him:
    "You will guard the house of man. You will be his best Friend.
    You will eat the scraps that he gives you and you will live 30 years.
    You will be a dog. " The dog answered:
    "Sir, to live 30 years is too much,give me only 15 years.
    " God granted his wish.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    God created the monkey and said to him:
    "You will be a monkey. You will swing from branch to branch doing tricks.
    You will be amusing and you will live 20 years. " The monkey answered:
    "To live 20 years is too much, give me only 10 years."
    God granted his wish.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Finally God created man and said to him:
    "You will be man, the only rational creature on the face of the earth.
    You will use your intelligence to become master over all the animals.
    You will dominate the world and you will live 20 years."
    Man responded: "Sir, I will be a man but to live only 20 years is very little,
    give me the 30 years that the donkey refused, the 15 years that the dog did not want and the 10 years the monkey refused.
    " God granted man's wish
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    And since then, man lives 20 years as a man, marries and spends 30 years like a donkey, working and carrying all the burdens on his back.
    Then when his children are grown, he lives 15 years like a dog taking care of the house and eating whatever is given to him, so that when he is old,
    he can retire and live 10 years like a monkey, going from house to house and from one son or daughter to another doing tricks to amuse his grandchildren.
    That's Life.

    Is'nt it?

    Eid Milaad-un-Nabi -(SAW)-
