What Encarta Says

Jinnah, Mohammed Ali (1876-1948), Indian politician and longtime leader of the Muslim League. Jinnah became the founding father of Pakistan and its first governor-general (1947-1948).
Jinnah was born in Karachi, a city in what is now Pakistan. (At that time, India and Pakistan were part of a British colony known as British India). Although his family, who were Muslim, came from the state of Rajkot in western India, Jinnah’s father was a prosperous merchant in Karachi. After being educated in Karachi and Bombay (now Mumbai), Jinnah studied law at Lincoln’s Inn in London, England, and was admitted to the bar in 1896. After serving briefly as a magistrate in Bombay, he practiced law in that city and soon rose to the top of the profession. He possessed strong advocacy skills and relied on his rhetorical ability to win many cases.
Jinnah’s first important contact with political affairs was in 1906, when he acted as private secretary to Dadabhai Naoroji, president of the Indian National Congress, a political organization that was working for Indian autonomy from British rule. In 1913 Jinnah joined the Muslim League, formed to protect Muslim interests against India’s Hindu majority, though at the time he still hoped for accord between the two groups. In 1916 he was elected president of the Muslim League and in 1919 became the representative of Bombay Muslims in the Imperial Legislative Council, a national legislative body with limited authority under the British colonial government. In the same year, however, the government enacted the Rowlatt Acts, which gave the Indian colonial authorities emergency powers to suppress so-called revolutionary activities. Jinnah, a staunch nationalist, resigned from the council in protest.
In 1920 the Indian National Congress launched the noncooperation movement, a mass campaign to boycott all aspects of British rule in India. Jinnah disagreed profoundly with the movement and resigned from the Congress. Jinnah advocated a moderate approach of cooperation with the British and gradual transfer of power. He continued to believe in the possibility of Hindu-Muslim unity, and worked strenuously toward that end in his second and third terms of office as president of the league. The differences between the Congress and the Muslim League were profound. Moreover, there was a serious personality clash between Jinnah and Mohandas Gandhi, the leader of the Congress. These differences emerged clearly in the Round Table Conference of 1930, where Indians and British members of parliament met to discuss India’s political future. Jinnah’s frustration at the impossibility of settlement led him to suspend his political activities for four years, during which time he practiced law in England. In 1934 he returned to India on a visit to preside over a Muslim League session and decided that he must remain permanently in India to look after Muslim interests.
The Government of India Act of 1935 transferred considerable power to Indian provincial governments, and in the general elections of 1937 the Congress won a majority in 7 of 11 provinces. The Congress refused to form coalition governments with the Muslim League as Jinnah had proposed. As a result, tensions between Hindus and Muslims grew rapidly. In Hindu-majority provinces, many Muslims felt they were unfairly treated, and at one point Jinnah demanded the appointment of a royal commission to inquire into their grievances. Most Muslims concluded that no legislative weighting or other safeguards could protect them in a united India, where the Hindus would be an overwhelming majority.
In March 1940 Jinnah presided over a Muslim League session at Lahore, where the first official demand was made for the partition of India and the creation of the state of Pakistan, in which Muslims would be a majority. During three decades of political life, Jinnah had believed in the possibility of Hindu-Muslim unity, and it was with the utmost reluctance that he came to the view that partition was essential.
Having reached this conclusion, however, Jinnah never swerved from it. His tenacity through constitutional discussions between the league, the Congress, and the British government in 1942, 1945, and 1946 made partition certain. During these years Jinnah came to be known as Quaid-i-Azam, or “Great Leader.” When Pakistan was created on August 14, 1947, he became its first governor-general, and the title of Quaid-i-Azam was officially bestowed on him by a resolution of the first constituent assembly. Jinnah died of tuberculosis in Karachi in 1948.

PRESS RELEASE

The international community may be aware of the accusations, made by the US media in October, 2002 about nuclear collaboration between Pakistan and North Korea in the nuclear field. The allegations were categorically refuted by Pakistan on 18 October, 2002, when President General Pervez Musharraf, reiterating Pakistan’s firm commitment to nuclear non-proliferation had stated that Pakistan was not cooperating with any country, including North Korea. Pakistan’s commitment, affirmed at the highest level that it would not export any sensitive technologies to third countries remains unquestionable.

2.         It may be recalled that the US Secretary of State Colin Powell, during his interview with the NBC and ABC on 20 October 2002, had clearly stated that the President of Pakistan had assured him that Pakistan was not doing anything of that nature and that he had taken his word for it. Similar views were also expressed by the US National Security Adviser in an interview with the CNN. It is, therefore, clear that the US leadership did not give any weightage to the baseless and speculative allegations, leveled against Pakistan by the US media. The Government of Pakistan has also refuted the possibility of the US Government imposing sanctions against Pakistan since the allegations were baseless.

3.         The international community may also be aware that India had mentioned Pakistan’s alleged nuclear collaboration with North Korea at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Board of Governors’ meeting held in Vienna during November, 2002. India wanted the matter to be investigated. The Government of Pakistan strongly resented the Indian move. The representative of Pakistan emphasized to the IAEA that Pakistan had a strong export control regime in place and had an impeccable record in this regard. Rather than making such baseless innuendos against Pakistan, which had made unquestionable commitments that it would not export any sensitive technologies to third countries, it should look at India with its perfidious record of broken commitments, which should be censured and investigated.

4.         The Government of Pakistan also conveyed its disappointment to Russia over President Vladimir Putin’s remarks on 22 November 2002, when he expressed his concerns about the security of the nuclear assets of Pakistan.

5.         It is re-emphasized that Pakistan is fully aware of its responsibilities and is firmly committed not to share its nuclear technology, equipment etc. with any other country. Pakistan firmly believes in nuclear non-proliferation and would continue to work for promoting global as well as regional non-proliferation. The allegations leveled by the US media, India and Russia were totally baseless, motivated and malicious. It was in fact, India which was instrumental in spreading such false accusations to harm Pakistan

Immigration Matter

Mr. Chaudhry Ashraf (MP) Call all Pakistani brothers and sisters to discuss on new immigration policy on Sunday at Mt Eden War Memorial Hall, Balmoral 3p.m. Last night he talked on phone and,  told me to inform all Pakistani community about this gathering. So Please come forward and take part in this important discusion.

Check Point

During a county-wide drive to round up all unlicensed dogs, a patrolman signaled a car to pull over to the curb. When the driver asked why he had been stopped, the officer pointed to the big dog sitting on the seat beside him.

"Does your dog have a license?" he asked.

"Oh, no," the man said, "He doesn't need one. I always do the driving."

We thank Allah SWT for providing this day after the holy month of Ramadhan. We thank Allah for the opportunity to do ibadat in the month of Ramadhan.

This is not a day for speeches but we do need to talk about some things as we do not gather in very large numbers very often.

Masha-allah in all these mosques we have 5 times daily prayers and we have madressah for the children. NZMA has also taken the responsibility of making all janaaza(funeral)arrangements. We have very good ghusul fascilities at Ponsonby.

Brothers and sisters on behalf of the NZMA committee and branch committees I extend to you a hearty welcome and thank you for your continued support to NZMA.

I thank the management and staff of this O’RYANS stadium and the UNITEC as a whole. They have provided us with excellent facilities for our salaat.

The Sense Of Goose

The Sense of a Goose

In the autumn when you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in the "V" formation, you might be interested in knowing what science has discovered about why they fly that way. It has been learnt that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following by flying in a "V" formation, the whole folk adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.

Lesson......PEOPLE WHO ARE PART OF A TEAM AND SHARE A COMMON DIRECTION GET WHERE THEY ARE GOING QUICKER AND EASIER, BECAUSE THEY ARE TRAVELLING ON THE TRUST OF ONE ANOTHER......

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go through it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the power of the folk

Lesson......IF WE HAVE A MUCH SENSE AS A GOOSE, WE WILL SHARE INFORMATION WITH THOSE WHO ARE HEADED THE SAME WAY AS WE ARE GOING......

When the leads goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing and another goose takes over.

New Prime Minister

Jamali elected Prime Minister

Gets 172 votes; Fazl secures 86, Qureshi 70; PPP forward bloc support proves decisive

By Shakil Shaikh

ISLAMABAD: Bearded Baloch leader Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, a consensus candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-i-Azam and Grand National Alliance was elected Pakistan's 16th Prime Minister by a whisker.

Jamali bagged 172 votes in a House of 342, though in this return-of-democracy battle, 328 votes were polled with one abstaining. It has happened for the first time in the parliamentary history of Pakistan that a Prime Minister has been elected with an overall lead of just one vote over the required 50% votes.

"Mir Zafarullah Jamali has been elected with an overwhelming majority," Speaker Ch Amir Hussain made the announcement following the prime ministerial contest and vote-count. It was followed by thumping of desks, and traditional embraces and congratulations showered on the Baloch Sardar, who at one time served as a security guard for Mather-e-Millat Fatima Jinnah, sister of Quaid-i-Azam, in the early '60s.

"In am thankful to Almighty Allah, and then this House for electing me as Leader of the House," said Prime Minister-elect Zafarullah Jamali in his first address to the National Assembly after he won the confidence of the House through ascertainment secured by division at a special session of the Assembly.

Jamali, the first Baloch to be elected as Prime Minister from the underdeveloped area-wise largest but population-wise smallest province Balochistan, outnumbered his nearest rival from Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal candidate Maulana Fazl-ur Rehman, who secured 86 votes. The third candidate for the contest, the articulate Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who hailed from Multan and belonging to Pakistan People's Party-Parliamentarians, bagged only 70 votes, as 10 of his party colleagues shifted their loyalties.

A total of 329 members, out of 330 present including the Speaker, took part in the election. However, recently elected Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who also hailed from Balochistan, abstained from voting and kept sitting in the House.

Mir Zafarullah Jamali, who was a consensus candidate of Grand National Alliance and a combination of other smaller parties, recorded his name in parliamentary history with distinction, as he is the first Baloch from Naseerabad (NA-266), who has been elected Leader of the House.

Many observers maintain that he was elected Prime Minister with a majority of just one vote over and above the required 50% of the total strength of the House. However, the other view was that the requirement was just 165 votes, as only 329 members were present.

"The Prime Minister-elect owes everything to 10 PPP-P parliamentarians who switched their loyalties, as the law on defection is still kept inoperative," said a PPP-P member, who regretted that the Prime Minister would continue to thrive on the strength of "turn-coats."

With early proceedings of the House marred by heated debate on the Legal Framework Order, the election for the Prime Minister was conducted on the basis of division, as three lobbies were located where members went in after recording their votes. The members went in lobbies of their choice.

Now the Prime Minister after he takes oath, will have to take vote of confidence within 60 days, though in-between the by-polls on at least 7 seats (to be vacated by those who won two seats ) and some others to be vacated by those who opted for provincial assemblies, will be held and the House will be completed.

Intense lobbying took place within the House, as all efforts of the PPP-P leaders to win back the "turn-coats" prove abortive. Faisal did not pay any heed to his one time party colleagues. He indulged in hectic arguments to justify his decision, though his decision was not viewed favourably by those who in the concept of parliamentary loyalties.

The PML-Q's efforts to win over Imran Khan also failed, as he voted for the religious leader Maulana Fazl-ur Rehman. Besides the PML-Q, the Grand National Alliance, MQM, PPP-Sherpao, Pakistan Awami Tehrik, PML-Z, PML-Junejo, PML-Functional and several members from FATA voted for stocky Jamali.

The PPP-P members voted for Qureshi, a parliamentarian par excellence, but in the process the PPP-P lost 10 votes as Rao Sikandar, Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat and others voted for Jamali, who claimed to have personal friendship with them since his college days. "We have requested for their votes, and not purchased them," said Jamali.

The most interestingly decision was taken by the PML-N whose members voted for Maulana Fazalur Rehman. The Prime ministerial election took place after almost six weeks of the October 10 elections, primarily because of the hung parliament, which resulted in prolonged consultative process among the major political groups.

"The entire exercise was calculated and neatly planned with precision to get elected Jamali as Prime Minister," said one political observer, "I think Jamali can better be called as One-Vote Prime Minister."

A large number of ministers, politicians, and foreign envoys witnessed the election proceedings, though fumbling Speaker on many occasions amused those watching the election process.

"Leave behind everything, the democracy is restored and it is nice to see Parliament working for stable and strong democracy," said one MMA leader, who promised to play a constructive opposition role.

Message from Dr. Qadeer Khan

I thank Almighty Allah for giving me an opportunity to make Pakistan a nuclear power against all odds. I also take pride for my humble contribution in the defense filed of Pakistan. But what I accomplished so far does not end here-the struggle continues.

We need to redefine our goals and achieve them as a nation. We need to improve our literacy rate and focus on the quality of education with a clear goal. The education in our country needs a complete overhauling in order to make it purposeful and result-oriented.

Our government and the non-government organizations are equally responsible for making concerted efforts in the field of education. The READ Foundation is one of the non-governmental organizations, which has become the largest educational network in Pakistan. Ever since I came to know of the READ’s endeavors, I studied all facets of Foundation’s goals and objectives. I am very impressed with READ’s accomplishments within a short span of eight years.

Dr.A.Q Khan NI & Bar, HI, awarding
shield to Mr.Mahmood Ahmed Chairman
READ Foundation for his excellent service
to humanity in the field of education.

READ Foundation will soon establish adequate technical institution for all the students who are currently studying in READ’s schools. This would enable all the students to learn technical skills to become more productive, self-reliant and honorable. The READ has wholeheartedly launched a comprehensive plan to establish need-based technical educational institutions to facilitate all students and parents interested in learning practical skills and become earning hands. This approach would surely make a difference and contribute in addressing the rampant unemployment in the country. This can serve as an encouragement for all others to focus on the purposeful education with a clear vision and viable objectives.

READ has established 383 schools in the far-flung rural areas of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. READ Foundation provides quality education to the deserving and under privileged students. The Foundation caters for the needs of over seven thousand orphans and refugees students, whereas the total number of students exceeds forty thousands.

I am pleased to let all of you know that I am helping READ Foundation as its Patron-in-Chief. I encourage all of you to help READ in its educational endeavors. With your support and active participation, READ can spread the quality education throughout Pakistan.

You can sponsor a child, a female residential student, a school building, an orphan or a refugee student. There are pertinent details on this website for all of you to look into and see what you can do to make this nation an educated and civilized nation and our beloved country a strong and powerful one.

We can build Pakistan and achieve a lot by working together. Let us remain united and make our beloved country a welfare state among the comity of nations.
