FW: June Newsletter from Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi National ListM.P.

Welcome to our mid-June newsletter.

We are about a week away from much anticipated winter school holidays. For our
kids, the school holidays are a welcome break from studies, and a chance to revise
their school work. Looking back over the curriculum ensures our kids really understand
the subject areas, providing a strong base for their success in the second part
of the year.
As always, Government has been working tirelessly to ensure that our students
start with a strong base in order to compete in the global economy. Excellence
in education is our priority. A high-quality education is an essential requirement
for a skilled, creative, and productive workforce - a key ingredient in growing
a stronger economy.

Four out of five kids are succeeding but National's education plan is about getting
five out of five. To achieve this goal, in Budget 2012 we had allocated $60 million
towards quality teaching initiatives, largely funded by making minor changes to
teacher:student ratios. This would have saved the country $174 million over
four years.
However, after listening very closely to concerns of parents and teachers, it
became apparent that the proposed minor adjustments were causing a disproportionate
amount of worry for parents. This was never the Government's intention and we've
now moved to put the minds of parents and teachersreversing this part
of our education plan. We will no longer change the teacher:student ratios. This
does mean that the Government is no longer in a position to invest $60 million
towards quality teaching. We will also have to cover the shortfall of $114 million
over the budget forecast period however I assure you that our Government will
work through managing this shortfall in a balanced and considered manner, and
we will return to surplus by 2014/15.
Continuing the topic of Education, I am proud to announce that the Prime Minister's
Science Prize opportunity is now open to receive applications. I encourage the
top scientists of New Zealand to consider applying for this prestigious award.
The prize is worth $500,000 and demonstrates the importance of science and innovation
to New Zealand's future. We want to encourage more people to choose careers in
science and to inspire our scientists towards undertaking world class research,
right here at home. Entries can be lodged up until 24 July 2012 - for more details

On the theme of technology the Government, through the Department of Internal
Affairs, has launched an anti-spam mobile site that makes it easier to report
text spam. The public can forward any offending text messages free of charge to
the complaint site, along with additional information, to SPAM (7726). More details
are available by clicking here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hXpCQbhgrM8gkm32-X7znLuiiMT6doDNQc9Bu4Bf39HzcfabfwcHUU9Mja7qImrwxNbu6W10_TX0BO2fURxk8akp41yXj0HIc6T05RHAzV45k2XARx_xYt1zIterYsQt]
You may already be aware that National is committed to addressing New Zealand's
binge-drinking culture. Our Alcohol Reform Bill focuses on minimising alcohol-related
harm, including crime, disorder and public health problems, and zeros in on where
harm is occurring - particularly in relation to young people. We've been conscious
to take a balanced approach that does not unfairly penalise responsible and moderate
drinkers.
The bill proposes a split purchase age - 18 for on-licence premises such as bars
and restaurants, and 20 for off-licences such as supermarkets and liquor stores.
Parliament will consider the proposed split age as a conscience vote during the
committee stage of the bill and I want to guide my vote by what you think. As
such I encourage you to take a moment of your time and complete my online survey. Please
click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hXpCQbhgrM_Cume7WloOCRj6E4uLwa2DPOZc_aykd6CiE2fgomQuMmcJQaQHVISiHPh419JNNfSMgNASybSAxz6L4q4-fnptSyAu-Wq6t8gnMUMjLIe0Sudq13mPj21Qd2NB2x_4ArA=]
Throughout Manukau East, across New Zealand and around the world we celebrated
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15th June. To support this, my colleague Hon
Jo Goodhew, Minister for Senior Citizens was invited to unveil a sculpture at
the Age Concern Cambria Park Homestead. I think the positive work that Age Concern
and other such organisations put in towards raising awareness on Elder Abuse in
our society serves as an excellent gesture to show our elders we care. It also
serves as a reminder to us, and our future generations, that our elders must
be treated with respect and that abuse has no place in our society.
I also had the opportunity to attend the New Zealand Australian Punjabi Cultural
Association annual dinner in Melbourne. During my speech at the function, I shared
with New Zealanders who now live in Australia how the Government is working towards
delivering its goals. I congratulated them on their success while highlighting
that their contributions are welcome and required to ensure that New Zealand
remains a globally competitive nation.
Last, but not least, recently I joined friends and colleagues in Wellington to
celebrate the Tamil New Year. During the celebrations I was humbled to learn
about a school based in Chennai, India that provides quality education to children
free of charge. A New Zealander, Jane Watson, has been actively involved in running
this school in Chennai - even selling her own house in New Zealand to fund it
operations. It is little wonder that students who have graduated from a school
run under such a noble mandate are progressing to become dedicated professionals.
Finally I use this opportunity to remind you that I hold regular consultation
clinics at my office on Kolmar Road, Papatoetoe, Auckland. If you would like to
provide feedback or discuss any issues with me please call 09 278 9302 to make
an appointment.

Fonterra COO Delivers a Talk to the Pakistan - New Zealand Chamber of Businesses and Professionals

Fonterra Chief Operating Officer for International Farming Ventures, Peter Moore delivered a talk to the Pakistan – New Zealand Chamber of Businesses and Professionals on 6 June 2012 at Auckland, New Zealand.

Business persons and professionals from various ethnic communities were present at the talk.

Mr Mir Ikram Ul Haq, the Chairman of the Chamber welcomed Peter Moore to the Chamber. Mr Qaiser Rashid, Chief Executive of the Chamber gave a brief presentation on the Pakistan Dairy industry and Opportunities in the various sectors of dairy industry in Pakistan.

Hon Federal Minister of State and Chairman Board of Investment of Pakistan, Mr Saleem H Mandviwalla sent personalised messages to the Chamber and Peter Moore of Fonterra. His messages were read by Dr Zulfiqar Haider Butt.

Peter Moore, in his talk gave an overview of Fonterra, New Zealand’s largest company and talked broadly about Fonterra’s strategies with regards to its growth plans internationally. He emphasised that it usually took Fonterra several years to kick start its operations in new countries after countries were added in Fonterra’s business strategy. Peter’s talk covered Fonterra’s success in Australia, Brazil, USA, and China. However, as Peter mentioned  there were challenges in countries such as India, where Fonterra currently only had one Joint Venture, but was looking at setting up a demonstration farm in Nellore.; Peter mentioned,  “you need to adjust your plans for each geography and while 3,000 milking cow farms are possible in China, in India it is more likely that farms will be less than 1,000 cows”. Peter discussed the process for developing farms in new geographies, starting with a small pilot to test the theories and systems and when successful the business could be expanded. Peter advised the Chamber that Pakistan was not in Fonterra’s three years business strategy currently, but this could change. However, as Peter said, Fonterra will moves rather incrementally in exploring any global opportunities including Pakistan.

Qaiser Rashid said that Pakistan was at the verge of dairy boom, where overseas companies from countries such as Netherland were already taking huge interest in Pakistan towards setting up dairy projects. A Pakistan company was already setting-up a large dairy farm of 3,500 cattle jointly with Innovation Waikato, New Zealand. Qaiser further mentioned there were no issues with land and other resources in Pakistan and environment to set-up dairy farms in Pakistan was rather more conducive given Pakistan was a fifth largest producer of Milk throughout the world.

In his message Federal Minister of State, Pakistan Hon Saleem S Mandviwalla said to Fonterra that The very attractive feature of Pakistan including our strategic geographical location, 3 seaports, the 6th largest population of the world, 5-year tax holiday, liberal profit repatriation, 100% foreign equity options and 0-5% duty on plant and machinery make it a land of many splendours and opportunities. Foreign investors seeking a competitive manufacturing environment, mega projects promising healthy returns and skilled human resources in a growing market, are welcome to explore the vast opportunities available in the country”.

Col (Retired) Gul Khan gave a word of thanks to the attendees.

Alongside various business persons and professionals, Mr Jeremy D Slezak, Political and Economic Officer of united States Consulate General, Auckland; Dr Andrew Murphy, Associate Head of School of Communication, Journalism, & Marketing, Massey University, Auckland; Mr William Ulugia, Regional Labour market Manager, Work and Income MSD, Auckland; Dr Zaheer Ud Din Babar, Head of Pharmacy Practice in the School of Pharmacy, University of Auckland, Auckland; Chris Timmerman, Director, NZ Bio-Energy Solutions, TAUPO; Mr Taufik A Khan, Managing Director Ahmed Associate Rice Mills, Vice Chairman [2011] Rice Association Pakistan; Mark Green, Managing Director, Eye Level Marketing and Distribution Limited, Auckland; Peter Cooper, Visavant, Auckland; and Luigi Wewege, South African Business Council, Auckland attended the event.

FW: Zubair, Labour will fight asset sales all the way

Today the Government brings its asset sales legislation back into
the House following a rushed and disrespectful Select Committee
process.

Only nine of those people who gave submissions at the committee
were in favour of National's plan while 1421 were against. We
know that New Zealanders across the country are overwhelmingly
opposed to the sale of our state-owned assets. But National is
not listening.

The Government's only ideas are to cut frontline services and
sell our assets. This won't help grow our economy or secure our
long-term prosperity.

Labour will do everything we can to stop this legislation because
it sells out New Zealand.

We'll be putting up a number of significant amendments that will
require sensible, informed debate as well as making hundreds of
technical changes. That will delay the progress of the
legislation. We make no apology for that.

As our MPs fight this short-sighted and damaging legislation in
the House in the coming days,  please join our campaign to force
a citizens initiated referendum on the issue
[http://issues.co.nz/notyourstosell]. Over 80,000 Kiwis have
signed to date. With your help we can force National to let
Kiwis have their say on an issue that affects us all now as well
as future generations to come.

This new law will result in increased power prices at a time when
Kiwis can least afford it. We will lose of hundreds of millions
of dollars in dividends which currently flow back into our
communities. It will also see our assets ending up owned by
foreign and corporate investors. That can only leave us worse
off as a country.

Selling our assets is not in New Zealand's best interests. Please
help us fight it.

FW: June Newsletter from Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi National ListM.P.

Welcome to our June newsletter.

We are almost at the peak of Winter. Last week temperatures dropped to below 00c
in some parts of the country. However, as promised in my last newsletter the weather
won't stop us from getting on with doing what's best for New Zealand!

On Thursday, May 24 Finance Minister Hon Bill English delivered our Government's
fourth budget. Budget 2012 focuses on the four main priorities outlined by Prime
Minister John Key in his opening address to Parliament this year.

The Budget certainly invests in the future of New Zealand. We are positive that
it will stimulate new jobs and deliver better public services while ensuring that
the New Zealand economy gets back in to surplus by our target year of 2014/15. Returning
back to fiscal surplus will strengthen our economy.

In spite of difficult financial conditions the Finance Minister has ensured that
the Budget continues to allocate money towards better frontline health services.
Our Government has committed almost $1.5 billion towards extra public health services
over the next four years. Our target is to help deliver more operations and shorter
wait times for New Zealanders.

We have also increased annual spending on science and technology by $385 million
over for years. We have committed $511.9 million towards early childhood and schooling
initiatives. In addition this National led Government will invest $59.8 million
towards lifting the quality of teachers through professional development of teachers
and principals.

We are also investing $34 million towards preparing our schools for ultra-fast broadband
and $88.1 million towards building new hospitals as part of our commitment towards
building a brighter future for all New Zealanders.

Towards creating and maintaining safer communities we have made significant investments.
Last term the National-led Government put 600 extra police on the beat - 300 are
in the Counties Manukau region. We have established a new police headquarters recently
in Botany at an investment of $10.2 million along with opening up a new police station
in Otahuhu at a further investment of $8.2 million. The Budget has now set it target
at reducing the reoffending rate by 25 per cent by 2017, and it strongly focuses
on the rehabilitation of current offenders. Our efforts are targeted towards the
reintegration of offenders back in to the society as positive citizens.

Apart from the Budget there are a number of important pieces of legislation being
debated at the moment in Parliament. Of particular interest to many is the Alcohol
Reform Bill. Recently I received a copy of the petition from New Zealand Association
of Dairies, Groceries, and Small Businesses. The petition asks the Government to
maintain a fair and open economy where rules of the business are same for everyone.
Specifically the petition wants the Government to ensure that the same age restrictions
apply to both on and off licensed premises. I have looked carefully at the comments
in the petition and am confident that these will be raised in Parliament as it moves
through the various stages of the House.

My fellow MP Todd McClay and I also met with nurses and nursing student from India.
We discussed the announcement of an NZQA review and international qualification
changes from the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Todd and I assured protestors that
we have raised the issue with the Minister of Health and Minister for Tertiary Education
as we want to ensure fairness for all those studying in New Zealand.

I also met Lt Gen (retired) Bambang Darmono and his team from Indonesia as part
of our engagement with the Indonesian Government. This was arranged by the New Zealand
and Indonesia Friendship group.

Finally, I want to remind you all that I hold regular consultation clinics at my
office on Kolmar Road, Papatoetoe, Auckland. If you would like to provide feedback
or discuss any issues with me please call 09 278 9302 to make an appointment.
Yours sincerely,

Help fight back against National’s failed budget

John Key's government has overpromised and failed to deliver,
year upon year.

And it's hurting every day Kiwis.

Your donation to the Labour Party can help put us back into
government to deliver more jobs and higher incomes.

Dear friend

When John Key's government delivered its second zero budget last
week, it also delivered four years of failed promises. Four
years of promising to get our economy on track and failing to do
so.

This National Government has the worst growth record of any
government in the last 50 years. A record 1,000 New Zealanders a
week have left for Australia in the past year.

The number of children living in benefit-dependent households has
increased in 3½ years by 33,500. Unemployment has risen by 52%
since John Key took office.

I keep hearing stories from people I meet about how the National
Government's policies and inaction are making their lives harder
by the day.

Under Labour, things will be different:

We will create jobs by supporting exporters to expand and earn
more. We will get alongside Kiwis to help them get the
education and skills they need to seize the job opportunities of
the 21st century. We'll grow incomes by investing in science
and innovation to create more high-wage businesses. This is
where our future lies. We'll make it easier for Kiwis to save
for their first home and build a retirement "nest egg".

Campaigning is an expensive business and your generosity will
ensure that we can work hard for everyday New Zealanders. The
simple fact is membership fees alone cannot pay all of our bills
.

Donations from people like you ensure the smooth running of our
Labour Party offices, as well as helping us run election
campaigns.

I am asking for your help so we can get back into government
again in 2014.

One of the things that people told me again and again during our
organisational review is we need to work smarter at our Labour
Party offices. Unlike the Nats, we know that we can't deliver on
our organisational review and the work we need to do with a zero
budget. We need to invest in our future as a Party.

So, I'm happy to tell you we will be upgrading our membership and
fundraising database this year.

I'm asking for your help to fund it. This is about streamlining
our work - if we can work more efficiently and effectively, it
will mean that we can spend more time campaigning and organising
and less on administration. This will help us win in 2014!

We need to invest in our internal Party infrastructure. Please
give whatever you can manage now to help support the Labour
Party by clicking on this link.

Thank you so much for any help you are able to give us today.

Yours sincerely,

Moira Coatsworth

New Zealand Labour Party President

P.S. If, together, we can raise $50,000 by the end of June, we
can implement the project right away and have a new membership
and fundraising database up and running by the end of the year.
