Message on Eid-ul-Fitr by Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, MP
On this very auspicious day of Eid-ul-Fitr I wish all my brothers and sisters a very Happy Eid. Eid-ul-Fitr is the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan. During Ramadan our Muslim brot...
hers and sisters fast for 30 days from dawn to sunset and Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of this 30-day holy fasting period. Very fittingly Eid refers to celebrations or festivities and Fitr refers to breaking the fast.
For our Muslim brotherhood it is the time of year we gather, rejoice and thank Allah. It is also the time when all of us have the opportunity to reflect on our lives. Fasting reminds us of how fortunate we are and of our responsibility to those less fortunate than ourselves.
As National Member of Parliament of ethnic background I value the contributions of our Muslim Community. By sharing our culture with the rest of New Zealand, we add to the vibrancy and diversity that makes New Zealand a truly multicultural nation.
I hope that all of you enjoy the festivities of Eid and once again I wish all of you a very happy Eid

Submission on Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill

Made on behalf of the Urdu Hindi Cultural Association of New Zealand

The above organisation represents members from various cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds. The members have some serious concerns about this Member’s Bill on the following grounds:

Under the explanatory note, the general policy statement states that ‘this Bill amends the Marriage Act 1955 (the principal Act) to ensure that its provisions are not applied in a discriminatory manner.’ It further states that ‘marriage as a social institution, is a fundamental human right and limiting that human right to one group of society only does not allow for equality.’

We strongly dispute that marriage is a social institution only. For most of our members, it is a religious and/or civil sacrament and has inherent expectation of procreation. Same sex marriage goes against this very fundamental belief that we hold very dearly. It is a relationship that is recognized across cultures, countries and religions.

If the proposed amendment is to be used as a basic human right and as the main driving force behind the proposed amendment, then it will create further discriminations instead of rectifying the ‘current inequality’. The law also needs to take into account other groups of people who may also want to exercise their wish/right to a legal marriage, for example people in a polygamous relationship. Thus, the proposed act can be challenged at a later date to include polygamous marriages which are also viewed as a ‘social institution’ by many. If a definition of marriage can be amended once, what is to stop it being amended again!

We therefore urge you to vote against this bill for the following reason:

* Marriage is a religious and/or civil sacrament and in most ancient traditions is a sacred practice between two genders which has procreation as one of the key outcome of this union. Historically Marriage Act recognises the biological difference between the two genders and accepts a union between two genders. The Civil Union Act 2004 recognises the union between two people irrespective of their gender and sexual orientation.
* Civil Union Act provides most if not all the legal rights to an individual. The only key difference we see is the right to adopt children is afforded to the Civil Union relationships. In that case, the Act that needs to be amended is not the Marriage Act but the Adoption Act.
* It is our contention that amendment to the Marriage Act 1955 is unnecessary and does not address the issue of discrimination as it will set precedent for other types of social relationships to be recognised as marriage e.g. polygamous relationship.

From Multiply HQ

Hello. Stefan here, writing you from Multiply HQ in Jakarta, Indonesia.

As most of you are probably aware, Multiply's mission has evolved over the past year and a half to become the biggest and most beloved ecommerce marketplace in two very exciting markets, Indonesia and the Philippines. As our focus has shifted, we have reviewed all of our operations, and made some decisions that will affect everyone here.
  • From December 1st, we will unfortunately no longer be able to support Multiply in its current form - notably we will be removing the social networking and content sharing part of Multiply (photos, videos, blogs, social messaging, etc.). We have decided to discontinue providing and hosting these services, as we have concluded that other Internet sites who are committed to social networking services will do a better job serving you than we can.
  • For our existing users of social networking features, we will be providing easy ways for you to either download your stuff (photos, blogs, content, etc), or migrate it to other online services. We'll announce the precise details shortly. It will be your choice whether to download, migrate or just let your content lapse (and get deleted).
  • For our existing ecommerce users (both buyers and sellers) in Indonesia and the Philippines, there will be no action required.
  • Regarding any existing Multiply Premium subscriptions we will refund any unused balance, and apologize for any inconvenience this will cause. Please contact customer service to request a refund. Note that this is for Multiply Premium, not the ecommerce related Multiply Trust product.

I am aware of how disruptive this news may be, and understand the disappointment that it may cause. Ultimately this was a business decision, critical to our to success moving forward. Instead, we are excited to pursue our own mission to give the 350 million consumers in Indonesia and the Philippines a great way to buy and sell items online. Our singular focus now is for Multiply to retain its status as a vibrant e-commerce destination in Southeast Asia in the years ahead.

I suspect that many of you will not like this news, and am sorry to have to deliver it now. I hope that you will be able to understand the reasons for our decision and thank you for being a part of the Multiply community over the past eight years.

July Newsletter from Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi National List M.P.

July 2012
Vol 2, Issue 7

Garam masala
Newsletter for July 2012

Dear Zubair

Welcome to our July end newsletter.

The winter school holidays are over; our kids have returned back to school, mum and dad too have returned back to their normal schedule. We legislators also returned back to Parliamentary business in Wellington. Over the past couple of weeks there have been a number of positive news stories which I would like to share with you.

Before National was re-elected to Government New Zealand in 2011, we campaigned on comprehensive welfare reforms. This was because long-term welfare dependence is trapping too many new Kiwis into a life of limited choices. This week we took the first step to realise these promises by passing the first-phase of our welfare reforms into law.

These changes mean:

  • Essential bills, such as rent and power, will be managed for teen parents and young people on benefits directly by their support provider, with an allowance and payment card for living costs.

  • Teen parents will be eligible for childcare payments to allow them to continue education so they are better equipped to provide for their own family in the future.
  • Real-time information sharing will help identify at-risk young people who are on a collision course with welfare dependency as they leave school.

  • Sole parents will be actively supported into part time work when their youngest child turns five, and full time work when they turn 14.

Welfare reform is an important part of National's plan to deliver better public services. These reforms will fundamentally alter the welfare system with a new work-focused benefit system with greater work expectations, and a focus on the long-term cost of welfare dependency. For more information click here

Secondly, we're delivering on our plan to responsibly manage the Government's finances. Low inflation and low interest rates under National are helping New Zealand families save more, pay down debt, and get ahead. In fact, household savings are positive for the first time in a decade, and savings are expected to increase further.

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) information shows inflation of just one per cent in the past year, the lowest in more than 12 years. At the same time, floating mortgage rates are at less than 6 per cent, and are at their lowest level in more than 45 years. In real terms this is saving a family with a $200,000 mortgage about $200 a week when compared to what they were paying four years ago.

While inflation has been falling, the economy has continued to grow moderately under National's responsible management in tough economic times. This is reflected in wages which have increased about 11 per cent under National after taking into account tax and inflation.

However, our hard work for New Zealand is not limited to the prudent management of the economy. We are ensuring that the rule of law prevails in New Zealand, and we are making sure that Kiwis have quality healthcare services available to them, as they need it.

Towards maintaining law and order Police have just completed a six-month campaign targeting cannabis growers and dealers around New Zealand with great results. Nationally, the Police seized and destroyed over 130,000 cannabis plants and over 280 kilograms of dried cannabis, with a combined estimated value of $135.6 million.

We are determined to drive these criminals out of our communities, and out of business. One of National's priorities this term is delivering better public services, and this includes our Police. We are supporting them to protect our communities, prevent crime, and stay tough on criminals.

In the area of healthcare, I proudly share with you that New Zealand has had the third highest increase in spending in the OECD. In fact, during tight financial times, National has protected and grown our public health services.

The latest figures from the OECD show that in 2009/2010, New Zealand had the third highest increase in public health spending. Our increase of 3.4 per cent, when compared with the average zero increase demonstrated the importance the Government places on helping Kiwis to stay healthy. At the same time, New Zealand had one of the largest increases in the number of patients being cared for, or getting operations in our hospitals.

This demonstrates National's commitment to providing better public health services for our families. We are doing this while making every dollar go further with less bureaucracy and more focus on the frontline.

I also had a chance to spend some time with Prime Minister John Key when he visited my constituency of Manukau East to visit Jaedon Enterprises.

Jaedon represents another success story in Manukau. They employ 25 full time staff who supports the manufacture of innovative clothing that caters to specialist technical needs of our community. The Prime Minister himself was impressed that Jaedon employed staff from 18 different nationalities. Mr Key said that even though Jaedon was competing with the 'big boys' in a niche market, the personal service they provide makes them stand out from the rest.

I also visited Aorere College and Papatoetoe High School to meet with their school nurses and management team. This was an important visit as I wanted to better understand their needs and how they work with students to achieve their highest potential.

During the visits, the Principal of Aorere College, Patrick Drumm made a very good point. He summarised the role of teachers as an important medium to support their students, and they do this by providing them with quality education with the intention of raising low income students, to middle class professionals. We really rely on such positive teachers and principals who work proactively towards betterment of the society. The School nurses at both Aorere College and Papatoetoe High School are also doing an excellent job. The facilities provided to the students are quite impressive.

Another exciting story piece I would like to share with you is about the Rakshbandhan celebration. On 11th August the Hindu Organisations, Temples and Associations Forum are organising Raksh Bandhan celebrations at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Mt Eden, Auckland. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated by Indians to appreciate the bonds of universal fellowship and to recognise the role of women in the creation of a harmonious, just and peaceful society.

I encourage you to attend the event with your friends and family if you are able to as it is for a very worthy cause. For more information on the event please email rb@hota.org.nz

Finally, I would like to use this opportunity to remind you that I hold regular consultation clinics at my office on Kolmar Road, Papatoetoe, Auckland.

If you would like to provide feedback or discuss any issues with me please call 09 278 9302 to make an appointment. You might also like to connect with me on website www.bakshi.co.nz or on Facebook

UNO MUST ACTION FAST CRIME AND KILLING AGAINST MUSLIMS

PETITION: Stop Genocide Rohingya Muslims in Burma
To: we want United Nations to help Muslims in Burma

The longer the UN Security Council remains silent, the more people will die
You and I can make that happen. Burma's Noble Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has asked the international community for help. Tell the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to pass a resolution to stop the genocide in Burma. The clock is ticking. God have mercy on us all if we stand by and do nothing.
United Nations must to find a way to solve the suffering of the more than a million Muslims in Burma. There is an urgent need for medical supplies and food aid.

A large number of Muslims are killed in Burma by Budisht , army and police of Burma as Muslims are in minority in Burma but silence of World Powers on this issue is a more worse crime.
Muslims are compelled to remain inside the country as internal refugees. They face abuse in the forms of rape, torture, extortion, and murder.
Sexual violence and terrorizing thousands of Muslims women and their families
The situation of the Muslim minorities is more complicated because they are not recognized as citizens and any scope of any reconciliation will not give them any protection.

Grand Mufti: Repeating Umrah in Ramadan is not a Sunnah

JEDDAH: ARAB NEWS

Monday 23 July 2012

Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh, who is also president of the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars, has said that performing Umrah many times during Ramadan is not mentioned in Sunnah.
He said this ritual should be practiced moderately.
“Performing Umrah every day in Ramadan, annoying other Muslims, is haram. It is enough to do Umrah once or twice in Ramadan,” he told Okaz daily.
Al-Alsheikh was asked about numerous issues related to practices usually attached to Ramadan.
Al-Alsheikh was asked about what imams should do when praying Taraweeh.
He said Taraweeh should not be very long for the sake of elderly and ill people.
He also asked imams to make sure that they recite Qur’an fully during Taraweeh prayers in Ramadan.
Al-Alsheikh said that Allah only accepts good deeds if they are purely done for Him, and when they are done according to Qur’an and Sunnah teachings.
“A Muslim must worship Allah as He instructs him or her and must know that reward depends on how this worship is done. Allah, the most merciful, also encouraged us to make additional prayers after main ones to make up for our derelictions,” he said.
Al-Alsheikh asked owners of TV channels to avoid airing immoral shows during Ramadan and to find for themselves a good deed by airing meaningful, useful and effective programs.
He also warned from seeking fatwa from people with less knowledge. He asked the ulema (the highest religious scholars) to fear God when giving fatwa and envisage benefits.
He stressed that anyone who has the knowledge can give fatwa for private questions, but issues that related to the Ummah in general should be given by senior ulema only.
Regarding fasting mistakes carried by youth during Ramadan, Al-Alsheikh said that religious preachers should talk to youth in a language they understand and be a brother to them when trying to show them the right path.
They should know what interests them.
When he was asked about shortening prayers when traveling between Jeddah and Makkah, Al-Alsheikh said there are different opinions on this matter. Some people think that the two cities are so close that driving between them is not considered traveling, but they are still different cities.
Al-Alsheikh warned against the Internet, except for those how have insight and enough wisdom. “Internet contains many conflicts and lies, and anyone can write what he wants. Spending long time on the Internet is a mistake,” he said.

Garam masala
Newsletter for July 2012

Dear Zubair

Welcome to our mid-July newsletter.

This past week the mercury dipped to sub-zero levels in most parts of New Zealand, however, I am sure that most kids would have enjoyed a bit of extra sleep and spent some quality time with their families in the school break.

We legislators have also been fortunate to be on a break from Parliament. This provides us with a greater opportunity to meet, assist and engage with our constituent on things that matter to them most.

For me, one such opportunity to meet and engage was at the art exhibition Raga of Rainbow organised by the Child Cancer Foundation. The Raga of Rainbow involved colourful paintings by senior citizen Mr. Bhanu Shah. All proceeds from the sale of the paintings were donated to the Child Cancer Foundation to support children with cancer and their families. I think initiatives such as these demonstrate what a truly multi-cultural and caring society we are. Multi-ethnic doctors working with a multi-ethnic foundation towards the larger goal of protecting all of our children against cancer.

The Government gives high priority to the protection of our children and we understand that we need qualified social workers focused exclusively on our children to do that. Last October, National committed the phasing in of 149 extra social workers, last week the first 50 were announced. In Manukau East where I am based - Ferguson Intermediate, Holy Cross School, Papatoetoe East School, Papatoetoe Intermediate, Papatoetoe South School, Papatoetoe West School will all benefit from this service. St. John The Evangelist School, TKKM Otara and Yendarra School will also benefit from an increase in the number of social workers.

We are also working hard to further support our economy. The Finance Minister, Hon Bill English recently released the Government's financial statements for the 11 months to 31 May. The statements show that Crown's tax revenue was $667 million higher than forecast in the 2012 budget while core Crown spending was $431 million lower than forecast. The net result was an operating surplus of $5.91 billion - that's $1.13 billion better than forecast. While the results no doubt are encouraging and show that National-led Government's efforts are paying off, this Government remains committed to responsibly managing New Zealand's finances responsibly but also to make sure that we support our most vulnerable.

The National-led government is focused on growing our economy, creating jobs and higher incomes. One way by which we can do this is through safe and responsible development of our mineral resources. A recent poll conducted by New Zealand Herald and Digipoll shows that 67 per cent of those surveyed supported more mineral, oil and gas exploration. The poll received support from opposition MP Shane Jones who himself believes that the Northland economy needs this boost to curb New Zealanders from moving to Australia.

Another exciting news piece I would like to share with you today is regarding the work of Bhartiye Samaj Charitable Trust. On 13th July the Trust organised a fund-raising event (Shree Druga Mata ki Chowki) to raise funds for an appropriate retirement home for community elders. I hope that most of you attended the event with your friends and family as it was for a very worthy cause. To donate towards this noble project please contact Mr Jeet Suchdev on 09 443 0579 or by email - jeet@xtra.co.nz

Finally I use this opportunity to remind you that I hold regular consultation clinics at my office on Kolmar Road, Papatoetoe, Auckland. Saudi sisters steal money from shop

JAZAN: ARAB NEWS

Saturday 14 July 2012

Four Saudi sisters aged between 19 and 23 entered an ice cream shop in the southern city of Jazan, physically attacked the salesman, and stole an amount of SR 8,000 and a mobile phone, but they were later tracked down, the police announced.
Quoting the spokesman of Jazan police Maj. Abdullah Al-Qarni, local newspapers on Thursday said the police patrols in the city received information that four Saudi sisters broke the glass of the ice cream shop, and stole money as well as a mobile phone after beating up the salesman.
He said the four thieves were caught by a police patrol and detained at the police station, where they were being questioned.
The spokesman did not reveal the identity or nationality of the salesman but said he received treatment for minor injuries in hospital and was later discharged.
The salesman told the police that the four sisters entered the shop as normal customers, and one of them asked for a bottle of water. “When I went to the fridge to bring the water, a second sister opened the cash register and took all the money, which was SR 8,000, and a mobile phone,” he said.
He said the sisters physically attacked him before leaving the shop

Customs officers seize 18,000 liquor bottles

http://www.arabnews.com/customs-officers-seize-18000-liquor-bottles

JEDDAH: ARAB NEWS

Saturday 30 June 2012

Saudi drug enforcement authorities at Batha have foiled an attempt to smuggle 18,000 bottles of liquor that were hidden inside a truck carrying cooking oil.
Dhaifallah Al-Otaibi, director of customs at the Batha entry point, said: “We have seized the liquor bottles and handed over the truck’s driver to security agents for further investigation.”
He commended the customs officers for their vigilance in preventing drugs, liquor bottles and other banned and harmful products from entering the Kingdom.
Drug and liquor trafficking is one of the main problems facing security officers at the Kingdom’s entry points.
Saudi security forces have foiled attempts to smuggle drugs worth more than SR 1.65 billion into the Kingdom during the first three months of this year and arrested 503 drug smugglers, the Interior Ministry said.
Four Saudis convicted of drug trafficking, murder and illegal possession of firearms were beheaded in Jeddah recently, while three of their accomplices were sentenced to 15 years in prison and publicly flogged, the ministry added.

FW: June Newsletter from Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi National ListM.P.

Welcome to our mid-June newsletter.

We are about a week away from much anticipated winter school holidays. For our
kids, the school holidays are a welcome break from studies, and a chance to revise
their school work. Looking back over the curriculum ensures our kids really understand
the subject areas, providing a strong base for their success in the second part
of the year.
As always, Government has been working tirelessly to ensure that our students
start with a strong base in order to compete in the global economy. Excellence
in education is our priority. A high-quality education is an essential requirement
for a skilled, creative, and productive workforce - a key ingredient in growing
a stronger economy.

Four out of five kids are succeeding but National's education plan is about getting
five out of five. To achieve this goal, in Budget 2012 we had allocated $60 million
towards quality teaching initiatives, largely funded by making minor changes to
teacher:student ratios. This would have saved the country $174 million over
four years.
However, after listening very closely to concerns of parents and teachers, it
became apparent that the proposed minor adjustments were causing a disproportionate
amount of worry for parents. This was never the Government's intention and we've
now moved to put the minds of parents and teachersreversing this part
of our education plan. We will no longer change the teacher:student ratios. This
does mean that the Government is no longer in a position to invest $60 million
towards quality teaching. We will also have to cover the shortfall of $114 million
over the budget forecast period however I assure you that our Government will
work through managing this shortfall in a balanced and considered manner, and
we will return to surplus by 2014/15.
Continuing the topic of Education, I am proud to announce that the Prime Minister's
Science Prize opportunity is now open to receive applications. I encourage the
top scientists of New Zealand to consider applying for this prestigious award.
The prize is worth $500,000 and demonstrates the importance of science and innovation
to New Zealand's future. We want to encourage more people to choose careers in
science and to inspire our scientists towards undertaking world class research,
right here at home. Entries can be lodged up until 24 July 2012 - for more details

On the theme of technology the Government, through the Department of Internal
Affairs, has launched an anti-spam mobile site that makes it easier to report
text spam. The public can forward any offending text messages free of charge to
the complaint site, along with additional information, to SPAM (7726). More details
are available by clicking here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001hXpCQbhgrM8gkm32-X7znLuiiMT6doDNQc9Bu4Bf39HzcfabfwcHUU9Mja7qImrwxNbu6W10_TX0BO2fURxk8akp41yXj0HIc6T05RHAzV45k2XARx_xYt1zIterYsQt]
You may already be aware that National is committed to addressing New Zealand's
binge-drinking culture. Our Alcohol Reform Bill focuses on minimising alcohol-related
harm, including crime, disorder and public health problems, and zeros in on where
harm is occurring - particularly in relation to young people. We've been conscious
to take a balanced approach that does not unfairly penalise responsible and moderate
drinkers.
The bill proposes a split purchase age - 18 for on-licence premises such as bars
and restaurants, and 20 for off-licences such as supermarkets and liquor stores.
Parliament will consider the proposed split age as a conscience vote during the
committee stage of the bill and I want to guide my vote by what you think. As
such I encourage you to take a moment of your time and complete my online survey. Please

Throughout Manukau East, across New Zealand and around the world we celebrated
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15th June. To support this, my colleague Hon
Jo Goodhew, Minister for Senior Citizens was invited to unveil a sculpture at
the Age Concern Cambria Park Homestead. I think the positive work that Age Concern
and other such organisations put in towards raising awareness on Elder Abuse in
our society serves as an excellent gesture to show our elders we care. It also
serves as a reminder to us, and our future generations, that our elders must
be treated with respect and that abuse has no place in our society.
I also had the opportunity to attend the New Zealand Australian Punjabi Cultural
Association annual dinner in Melbourne. During my speech at the function, I shared
with New Zealanders who now live in Australia how the Government is working towards
delivering its goals. I congratulated them on their success while highlighting
that their contributions are welcome and required to ensure that New Zealand
remains a globally competitive nation.
Last, but not least, recently I joined friends and colleagues in Wellington to
celebrate the Tamil New Year. During the celebrations I was humbled to learn
about a school based in Chennai, India that provides quality education to children
free of charge. A New Zealander, Jane Watson, has been actively involved in running
this school in Chennai - even selling her own house in New Zealand to fund it
operations. It is little wonder that students who have graduated from a school
run under such a noble mandate are progressing to become dedicated professionals.
Finally I use this opportunity to remind you that I hold regular consultation
clinics at my office on Kolmar Road, Papatoetoe, Auckland. If you would like to
provide feedback or discuss any issues with me please call 09 278 9302 to make
