Placement Programme

Dear Friends,

Auckland Regional Migrant Services (ARMS) is trying to make contact with as many unregistered overseas trained doctors in Auckland as possible and would appreciate the following information being shared through your networks.

Health Workforce NZ is currently developing the NZ REX Preparation Placement Programme to assist unregistered International Medical Graduates (migrants and refugees) who are residing in New Zealand.

On behalf of Health Workforce, ARMS is collecting data on the number of overseas trained doctors in the Auckland region who may be interested and eligible for such a programme.

For more information and to receive a questionnaire, please email Anna Fyfe-Rahal on annafr@arms-mrc.org.nz

Thanks!

“Fairness at Work”

There was a strong feeling in Auckland last Saturday at the “Fairness at Work” rally which I joined along with a number of my Caucus colleagues.
It was heartening to see the good crowds also at the rallies in Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
At a time when unemployment is still rising, the Government is making Kiwi workers even more vulnerable by extending its 90 day laws to all companies.
Most employers are fair and reasonable but it is not right or fair that under this law bad employers can sack a wage or salary earner in the first 90 days without even having to give a reason or allow an employee to appeal the decision.
This legislation is a license for a minority of bad employers to sack people , deprivng them of their livelihood for bad reasons without ever having to justify their actions.
We've seen plenty of of examples already under legislation already passed by National covering small firms.
Stripping away the rights of wage and salary earners will drive down wages and do nothing to raise the living standards of most New Zealanders.
New Zealand needs a high wage, high-skill economy. But National’s 90-day ‘fire at will’ Bill takes away protections for working people that will drive us towards lower wages and conditions.

“Slow-motion Tsunami”,

HIGH COMMISSION FOR PAKISTAN

WELLINGTON

PRESS RELEASE

Subject:- New Zealand Government and People’s Generosity For     Pakistan Flood Relief.

The High Commission on behalf of the Government and People of Pakistan acknowledges with gratitude the solidarity the Government and People of New Zealand have shown towards the flood affected people in Pakistan.

The New Zealand Government by announcing NZ$ 2 million, was one of the first to respond to this calamity of phenomenal proportions. Sensing the unfolding scale of the havoc, New Zealand has recently doubled its donation to NZ$ 4 million.

Besides the New Zealand Government, several leading International Relief Agencies such as Red Cross, World Vision, UNICEF, Save the Children, Oxfam and many others are actively engaged in a commendable task of collecting donations and channeling the aid to flood affected people to alleviate their sufferings.

The High Commission is also grateful for the donations received in the Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2010 set up by the High Commission itself.

This all would have not been possible without the benevolence of the Kiwis who stepped forward with their open hearts to help.

Government of Pakistan has committed all its national resources to the flood Relief and Rescue Operations with a view to provide shelter, food, clean drinking water, medicines and sanitations to the affected people. Over 50,000 troops, 77 helicopters and 975 boats besides other local authorities are involved in round the clock relief operations.

As the magnitude of the catastrophe, in the words of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, “Slow-motion Tsunami”, unfolds, it causes colossal damage and misery to the lives of 20 million people who have lost their hearths and livelihoods. All the standing crops, livestock, 1.2 million houses and infrastructure in the 5th of the country have been washed away.

Despite all the odds, the resilient people of Pakistan are determined to overcome this challenge with the help of friends and international community.

            Dear brothers and sisters,

Ramzaan is the ninth month of Islamic calendar. This is the month in which Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H).

Throughout this holy month the universal element of Islam is evident as Muslims across the world take stock of their lives and their faith.

The holy month of Ramzaan unites all Muslims in fasting, feasting, prayers, zakath and helping needy people. It is the time for contemplation, spirituality and brotherhood.

May Allah Almighty bless us in this holy month and accept all our prayers and good deeds. Aameen.

Taxi Driver

A taxi passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped just inches from a shop window.
For a second everything went quiet in the cab, then the driver said: "Look, buddy, don't ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!"
The passenger apologized and said: "I didn't realize that a little tap would scare you so much."
The driver replied: "Sorry, it's not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver. I've been driving a funeral hearse for the last 25 years."

Red Cross calling for donations

Hi everyone

Please pass this on to your Pakistan or South Asia community/business etc contacts. We are thinking of all the people affected by these horrific floods and sending them our best wishes and some practical help.

Thanks,

INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS LAUNCHES APPEAL FOR PAKISTAN FLOODS

New Zealand Red Cross today announced it would support an international emergency appeal to help people living in miserable conditions after extensive flash floods in Pakistan.

Calling for donations, New Zealand Red Cross International Operations Manager Andrew McKie said, ?funds will help Pakistan Red Crescent Society branches and volunteers to deliver food, health services, tents, tarpaulins, water and relief items including hygiene kits and cooking equipment?.

New Zealand Red Cross is making a contribution of $13,000 to the operation, which plans to help 25,000 families for nine months in floods that are reportedly the worst in living memory. Many areas are still cut off by flooded roads and collapsed bridges, hampering relief efforts.

Many families have been forced from their homes and have been left with no means of support. They are living in miserable conditions. This appeal will help the Red Cross deliver more food, water and shelter materials,? said Mr McKie.

Flooding brings public health risks so a priority for the Red Cross and Red Crescent is ensuring clean water and sanitation to alleviate the threat of disease,? he said.

Two Kiwi aid workers are working in a Red Cross hospital in Peshawar in Pakistan treating war-wounded people. They are safe and not affected by the floods, McKie said.

One hundred percent of funds donated to the Pakistan floods through New Zealand Red Cross will go to the international emergency appeal.

New Zealand Red Cross urges supporters to donate cash, not goods, so that the right relief items can be sent to people in need as quickly as possible. Find out more here. http://www.redcross.org.nz/cms_display.php?st=1&sn=43&pg=513

Donations can be made online at www.redcross.org.nz or by phoning 0800 RED CROSS (0800 733 276).

Migrants loan needs must be considered : Ashraf

30 July 2010    Media Statement

Migrants loan needs must be considered

Labour Associate Ethnic Affairs spokesperson Dr Ashraf Choudhary says the Government must take into account the financial struggle migrant and refugee families will face if it plans changes to Labour’s interest-free student loan scheme.
“Labour introduced interest-free loans in 2005 to give more Kiwis the opportunity for higher learning,” Ashraf Choudhary said. “After promising to keep the scheme in place, Prime Minister John Key is now hinting at a back-track.
“Many skills and qualifications gained in migrant countries of origin are not transferable in New Zealand, and therefore it is vital new migrants undertake study here to achieve qualifications that are recognised.
“Earlier this week John Key spoke to students at Victoria University about student loan debt, and suggested that the interest-free student loan scheme doesn’t economically ‘stack up’,” Dr Choudhary said. “That makes me question his motives
“If National is toying with the idea of bringing back interest it must seriously look at the deterrent impact that will have on migrant and refugees gaining an education which is beneficial to their family, future security and to New Zealand.
“Student loans already create long-term impacts on the financial security of families, such as buying a home and saving for retirement.
“Women also take twice as long on average to repay their loans, particularly when they take time out of the paid workforce to have children,” he said.

Florida church plans 'Burn a Quran' Day on 9/11

Church head Terry Jones posted "Islam is of the Devil" sign
Church head Terry Jones posted "Islam is of the Devil" sign

DUBAI/ CAIRO (Rasha al-Khayat, Amira Fouda)

A Florida church known for its anti-Islamic statements is planning a ceremony to burn copies of the Quran in commemoration of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, has promoted on its website and other social networking sites the burning Islam’s holy book copies.

The church called for repeating its “Everybody Burn Quran Day” it celebrates “in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam.”

The church, which also launched several campaigns against homosexuality and abortion, stirred much controversy last year after distributing T-shirts that read, "Islam is of the Devil."

Church leader Dr. Terry Jones published a book under the same title and posted outside the church a poster conveying the same message.

Several Facebook groups were formed to counter the campaign like “In Protest of International Burn a Koran Day” and “Against Everybody Burn Quran Day."

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a statement asking Muslims to invite friends and distribute copies of the Quran
