LABOUR MEMBERS ENJOY SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE
There’s been a huge amount of feedback about the Labour Party’s annual conference at the Aotea Centre in Auckland.
Delegates, supporters and even the media have all reported stimulating policy sessions and speeches which covered a wide range of topics.
In my keynote speech, I unveiled a new policy that will stop the sale of New Zealand farmland to foreign buyers unless they can prove significant benefit in downstream processing and job growth for New Zealand.
Under a Labour Government, would-be buyers of rural land would have to invest in New Zealand and our people by bringing jobs, transferring technology, increasing exports or bringing other benefits for New Zealand.
Annette King also outlined a new direction for Labour in terms of social policy with her speech titled “Putting Children First”. It will focus on giving Kiwi children the best start in life and supporting families so they have the tools they need to raise healthy and happy children.
So overall, there were plenty of fresh ideas at the conference and delegates went away motivated to win next year’s election and put our ideas into practice in Government.
Assalaamu Alaykum Warahmatulla
The Prophet (Sallallaho Alayhi Wasallam) frequently commented upon the nature and value of various foods .
Food as Medicine
HEADACHE? EAT FISH! Especially for all the ladies.
Eat plenty of fish -- fish oil helps prevent headaches.
So does ginger, which reduces inflammation and pain.
HAY FEVER? EAT YOGURT!
Eat lots of yogurt before pollen season.
Also-eat honey from your area (local region) daily. ( Hay fever is an allergic inflammation of the nasal airways. It occurs when an allergen such as pollen or dust is inhaled by an individual with a sensitized immune system, and triggers antibody production.)
India's biggest Festival! Diwali, "The Festival of Lights" is coming to Waitakere City. The year's programme will start at 11 am with a colourful presentation of rich Indian culture and tradition on the theme of Diwali - A festival of lights. The organisers Waitakere Indian Association wish to extend a warm invitation to one and all. Get involved and experience the richness of India's culture and heritage, right in the heart of Waitakere.
Diwali Festival was initiated in Waitakere by Waitakere Indian Association (WIA) in 2000 and has grown from strength to strength since then and Waitakere City Council has developed a partnership with Waitakere Indian Association (WIA) and Waitakere Ethnic Board (WEB) to celebrate the event. In last two years, WEB had worked with WIA to organise it, but this year it has again been passed to WIA to organise. This festival is intended to attract the wider Kiwi communities to participate in the event. In the last two years we have seen some 10,000 people attend the event.
The overwhelming support from both the Indian and wider communities has helped to inspire and motivate us to make this yet another successful Diwali Festival celebrated in Waitakere City. This year there will be a spectacular indoor fireworks display along with traditional and bollywood type performances, Rangoli Art Exhibition and of course the outdoor fireworks display. There will also be performances by other ethnic groups. On sale will be exotic Indian food and Indian Arts and Crafts.
Diwali has great cultural, moral and religious significance to Hindus all over the world.
Diwali, commonly known as the festival of lights throughout the world is celebrated in a cordial atmosphere embracing Indian culture and heritage. It is the time for happiness, renewing friendship and work towards collective unity.
Last years festival was a huge success with thousands of people enjoying food, festivities and fabulous weather. We were thrilled by the support of the diverse community; be it patrons, stallholders, performers and the business community.

Media Statement
Welcome election to the Labour Party Ethnic Sector Council
The Labour Associate Spokespersons for Ethnic Affairs Dr Ashraf Choudhary MP, Dr
Rajen Prasad MP and Raymond Huo MP have welcomed the election of Somali-Kiwi,
Adam Awad as Chairperson and Chinese-Kiwi, Z.F. Wu as deputy Chairperson of the
Executive Committee of the Labour Party Ethnic Sector Council at last weekend’s annual
conference of the Labour Party.
The Sector, which is under the umbrella of the Labour Party, was initially established by
Dr Choudhary in 2004 as a platform to promote and include the ethnic communities in
political decisions.
The appointments of Adam Awad and Z.F. Wu means they will focus on enhancing the
objectives of the NZ Labour Party, Dr Choudhary says.
“They will provide an active and positive voice for the Ethnic communities within the Party
and wider political forums, and foster the setting-up of new Ethnic branches throughout
New Zealand, as a welcoming place for Ethnic members of the Party.”
“The outgoing chair Dr Pushpa Wood has done well in advancing these causes and I am
delighted that she will continue on the executive committee as past chair. We now have a
significant proportion of the Labour membership of ethnic origin,” Dr Choudhary says.
Dr Prasad also welcomes the ethnic diversity of the sector. “The Chair is of African origin,
his deputy is from Taiwan and the secretary is from the Philippines while many other
ethnicities are represented on the Ethnic Council.”
At the first meeting of the Ethnic Council, Chairperson, Adam Awad, said the new team
will build on what has been achieved so far. “During our term we want to build a solid
action plan for the ethnic sector. We want to be strongly action oriented. We will
strengthen our relationship with other parts of the Labour Party so all policies reflect the
true diversity of NZ,” he says.
For Raymond Huo the Chinese-Kiwi appointment strengthens Labour’s relationship with
the Chinese community.
"Being the largest ethnic sector in the country, Chinese-New Zealander’s have a lot of
respect for Phil Goff and appreciate that Labour has always put the needs of people first
- not just some people but all of us."
Dr Choudhary says one of the aims of the Labour Ethnic Caucus is to strive hard to keep
encouraging more ethnic diversity in the next parliament.
“The diversity of current ethnic sector elections supports this.”
Mr Awad agrees: “One of our goals is to increase the number of MPs from different
ethnic backgrounds. And we want full ethnic representation in the Labour Party. More
importantly, our goal is to get Labour back into government. And we will do that. ”

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said wealthy Pakistanis must do far more to help their countrymen who were devastated by this summer's floods.
She said the Pakistani government had to expand its tax base so more could be collected to help reconstruction.
It was "absolutely unacceptable" for well-to-do Pakistanis to avoid paying their fair share, she said.
The flooding across a swathe of Pakistan left up to 2,000 people dead and affected up to 20 million.
'Affluent and elite'Mrs Clinton was speaking after a meeting with EU foreign affairs chief Baroness Ashton in Brussels.
Mrs Clinton said: "It's absolutely unacceptable for those with means in Pakistan not to be doing their fair share to help their own people while taxpayers in Europe, the United States and other contributing countries are all chipping in."
The EU and US have contributed some $450m (£280m) each to the Pakistan flood aid effort and the EU has also offered a trade deal to lift certain duties.
Mrs Clinton went on: "The most important step Pakistan can take is to pass meaningful reforms to expand its tax base.
"The government must require that the economically affluent and elite support the government and people of Pakistan."
The BBC's Syed Shoaib Hasan in Islamabad says Pakistan's tax system has come in for a great deal of criticism in recent years.
Tax collection remains abysmal, he says, and Pakistan's elite routinely evade taxation by using political influence.
The worst offenders include landlords and industrialists, some of whom are part of the current government, our correspondent says.
Following the floods, hospitals, schools, bridges and thousands of kilometres of roads need to be rebuilt with a total reconstruction bill that could stretch into tens of billions of dollars.
The floods, caused by heavier than usual monsoon rains in July, inundated a fifth of the country, destroying or damaging almost two million homes.
Good Day

5 October 2010 Media Statement
Paul Henry lives in colonial times
Labour associate Ethnic Affairs spokesperson Dr Ashraf Choudhary says TVNZ Breakfast host Paul Henry lives in colonial times.
“Our airwaves can do without people like him,” Ashraf Choudhary said. “Racism has no place in New Zealand and he needs to do the honourable thing and resign.
“TVNZ has made the right decision in taking action against Paul Henry in response to his offensive comments about Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand, but two weeks without pay is a slap on the wrist compared to the offense he has caused among ethnic communities,” Dr Choudhary said.
“Prime Minister John Key told the media on Monday that he cannot ‘be held personally responsible for what comes out of Paul Henry’s mouth’, yet as Prime Minister he should take a firmer stand when people make racist comments.
“Many people in ethnic communities are highly upset about Mr Key’s soft approach,” Dr Choudhary said.
“Earlier in the month Land Information and Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson went completely over the top in making offensive and totally uncalled for slurs on New Zealand Muslims, but Mr Key excused his minister’s behaviour by calling it a joke.
“John Key needs to be held responsible for down-playing racist comments by his current and former National Party colleagues,” Dr Choudhary said.
“The ethnic community should make their complaints known to TVNZ and John Key for their failure to react seriously to racist comments.”

To my fellow Pakistanis,
I would like to draw your attention to the following link.

It certainly is a sad day when our own PANZ president does not acknowledge his Pakistani heritage let alone the fact that he is supposedly the voice for the Pakistani community in all of Auckland.
It seems as though Mr Khan is counting on then votes of his fellow Indians and Islanders communities and has very conveniently omitted any Pakistani ties to the community.
Mr Piami I have heard you say on several occasions in several public domains where you jubilantly brag about your presidency in PANZ. Does this mean you’re a proud Pakistani in front of the people of Pakistan but not the people of Auckland?
You have very slyly alluded to your Punjabi heritage giving the illusion to the people that you are Indian. You will no doubt argue that you have not written this but Mr Piami it’s what you have not written that speaks volumes.
As president of PANZ, you are answerable to the Pakistani community. I would like to know where the money that you have collected in the name of ‘charity for the flood victims’ has gone. As collectors and donors, we are entitled to see proof that this money has been used for its intended purposes and not wound up in another corrupt bureaucratic pocket.
