BLOOD DONORS NEEDED

Greetings Billa again from the New Zealand Blood Service.  We value your
support of our crucial service for the New Zealand Health System.
As it is now over three months since we had a donor group from your
place, are hoping that you will help organise a donor group from your
company.

Firstly we [and the patients at the hospital] sincerely appreciate your
efforts as the BLOOD DONOR co-ordinator contact for your organisation.  At
the moment we are short of blood; given that it is winter and we have lost
many donors due to the UK [mad cows disease] restriction mentioned later in
this email.   As you can appreciate, scheduling a group through our donor
centre not only minimises time and other inconveniences - but goes a long
way in helping blood shortfalls.  If it helps maybe you could forward around
the email as below to help  'motivate' as many staff as possible - any help
what-so-ever is sincerely  appreciated.

Please contact us on 523 5749 or by return email - if you require absolutely
any further information.  We look forward to booking your group[s]  in with
a date and time that suits and arranging transport if required.  Many thanks
in anticipation - Russell.

Press Release No. 214

The Government of Pakistan strongly condemns the arrest of senior APHC Leader, Mr. Yasin Malik. The arrest of Mr. Malik in Jammu on 15 July 2003 is yet another manifestation of India’s policy to brutally suppress the freedom movement in the Indian Occupied Kashmir. It also betrays the Indian government’s claim of seeking a peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

To facilitate a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir dispute, in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people, the Indian Government must put an end to the harassment of the APHC leadership, respect fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people including their right to assembly and peaceful protest and enter into a meaningful dialogue with Pakistan for a fair settlement of the Kashmir dispute.

PRESS RELEASE

         PRESS RELEASE

The Government of Pakistan has lodged a strong protest with the Afghan Government over the attack on the Pakistan Embassy by an armed crowd in Kabul this morning.  The Afghan Cd’A was summoned today to the Foreign Office.  The Acting Foreign Secretary, while conveying the protest and grave concern of the Government of Pakistan, emphasized that apart from the normal responsibility of the Afghan Government under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, to protect diplomatic Missions, property and personnel, the Afghan authorities were in a position to prevent the assault.

The Embassy had informed the Afghan authorities that after the statement of President Karzai on 6th July 2003, such a demonstration was to be expected, and that adequate security measures must be taken. The Afghan authorities had anticipated that a demonstration was expected at the city center, which could reach to the gates of the Pakistan Embassy, and that the Afghan Security Forces would ensure that no untoward incident took place.

This morning the Afghan Security Forces surrounded the Embassy, and informed that they had been positioned to protect the Embassy.  The Pakistan Ambassador then went to meet with a senior Afghan official to seek guarantees for full protection of the Pakistan Embassy premises and personnel. At that point the Afghan Security Forces permitted a mob armed with guns and sticks to violate the premises of the Embassy and to destroy all the Embassy’s equipment and furniture, and also all Embassy vehicles in the compound. The Embassy staff were forced to withdraw to the Residence of the Ambassador.

The Afghan Cd’A was further told that in the past few days there had been a pattern of unjustified official criticism of Pakistan.  The movement of the Pakistan army to the international border in the Mohmand Agency, was to secure this area which had become a refuge for terrorists and to seal the border, which had been the constant demand also of the Government of Afghanistan. It was regrettable that Pakistani troops within Pakistan’s territory had been fired upon by Afghan nationals first within the territory of Pakistan and then from across the border. Pakistan has informed the Afghan authorities that any differences on this issue could be resolved at the forthcoming meeting of the Tripartite Commission of Pakistan, Afghanistan and the U.S.

The Acting Foreign Secretary underlined that: the Afghan Government provide immediate and effective security for the Pakistan Embassy in Kabul as well as Pakistan’s other Consulates in Afghanistan; apologize for the assault; pay compensation for the damage inflicted; and hold an enquiry to assign responsibility for the deliberate failure of the security forces to prevent the assault and to identify and punish the perpetrators.

Islamabad,

8th July 2003

Fare well Niazi

The High Commissioner, Khizar Hayat Khan Ziazi, warmly thanked the organizers, Pakistan Association (Melbourne) and Cricket Australia for hosting the wonderful farewell. He thanked the Cricket Australia and confided to guests that he took particular delight in the fact that it was only during his term of office that a Pakistan team had finally managed to defeat the magnificent Australian XI. On a more serious note, the long time career diplomat expressed his particular satisfaction with the very significant improvement in the bilateral relationship that had taken place during his time here. While modest about his own role, he paid tribute to the open, honest and straightforward ways of the Australians with whom he engaged at all official levels. This enabled frank discussions, respect of viewpoints and ultimately created the right environment for strong cooperation and steady progress. He said he has thoroughly enjoyed his time in Australia in the service of his country and appreciated the opportunities it had provided. It was a great source of pride, he noted that wherever he was posted, there were always fellow countrymen willing to extend the hand of friendship and hospitality and he particularly thanked the Melbourne community for making him feel so much at home among friends.
