‘Jaagriti,’

Support Group promotes welfare of Asian women
By Staff Reporter of Indian News Link 15/05/2011 11:29:00

‘Jaagriti,’ (Awakening) Women Support Group a social welfare organisation focusing on promoting the unrepresented interests of women of Asian origin has changed its name to reflect the need for their proactive participation in community affairs.
‘Saheli’ (Friend) has now become ‘Jaagriti,’ (Awakening) to encourage women to raise their voice against their oppression, physical, mental and sexual abuse, family violence and better representation in the society.
Roopa Suchdev, Chairperson of ‘Roopa Aur Aap Charitable Trust,’ which manages ‘Jaagriti,’ said that despite their education and emancipation, many women continued to be victims of harassment and unreported crimes against them.
“Even before ‘Saheli’ was established in 2009 as the Women’s Wing of the Trust, we were providing (through Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust), a series of support services to women, who were unfortunate victims of domestic harassment.
“We have had cases of women beaten up by their husbands and in-laws for failing to obtain cash or jewellery continuously from their parents.
“Apart from such despicable practices, women have also been subject to work both outside and inside their homes,” she said.
Ms Suchdev said such sufferings were highly irregular and unacceptable in New Zealand, which prides itself of providing equal rights and opportunities for women.
“Over the years, we have focused on these issues through Roopa Aur Aap TV programme and community gatherings. We seek the support of like-minded people to continue engagement with the communities concerned to address issues of importance. We propose to organise workshops and seminars on Prevention of Family Violence, Handling Relationships and Education Awareness Programmes,” she said.
‘Jaagriti’ will also empower women by making them aware of their legal rights and obligations, managing finances, securing jobs and promoting health issues, she said.
For further details, call Roopa Suchdev on (09) 4435622 or 021-665609.

Made deep cuts to Working for Families

Today, National delivered a Budget that will hurt hard-working Kiwis already struggling to get ahead but won’t fix our dire economic situation.
Their Budget:
Confirmed asset sales
Undermined the future of KiwiSaver
Made deep cuts to Working for Families
Identified future cuts worth $1 billion in the public sector
Many Kiwi families are struggling to get ahead.
They are having a hard time putting food on the table, petrol in the car and keeping their homes warm. They’re worried that that one in four young New Zealanders are out of work and losing hope.

What the country needed was bold and courageous action. What we’ve got from National is a long list of broken promises.

National said it wouldn’t cut KiwiSaver, Working for Families or student loans and that it wouldn’t increase GST.
It’s done all of those things.

Labour accepts that existing spending is not sacrosanct. But if cuts have to be made, they should be justifiable and fair. The sacrifices that need to be made to turn our country around should be fairly shared by all New Zealanders – not just pushed on to those who can afford it the least.

Labour will relieve the financial pressure from the rising cost of living because we think New Zealanders deserve a break.
Labour's plan:
We will stop asset sales to keep power prices under control.
We will take GST off fresh fruit and vegetables.
We will make the first $100 a week tax free.
We will implement bold new economic policies and a fairer tax system.
Labour will put hardworking families at the centre of everything that we do.
Today, I'm asking you to join with me in voting no confidence for National's "No plan, no vision" budget.
Please click here or on the button below to show your support. And please encourage your friends and families to join us. Let's make this Bill English's and John Key's last budget.

Kind regards,
Phil Goff
Labour Leader
PS. As expected, National confirmed it's intention to sell state assets. Under Labour there will be no asset sales. If you haven't already, please sign our petition, join us on Facebook and donate a $10 stop sign to the campaign - they're still in hot demand by activists up and down the country. Thanks again for all you do.

Abbottabad incident.

 A Resolution adopted by the Joint Session of Parliament on 14 May, 2011, on Abbottabad incident.
               You may wish to see the Resolution, for your information on:

PR. NO.165/2011

Date: 14/05/2011

Resolution
adopted by the Joint Session of Parliament on
14 May, 2011

The Senate of Pakistan and the National Assembly, in a Joint Session held on 13-14 May 2011, considered the situation arising from the unilateral US forces action in Abbottabad on 2 May 2011.

After an in-depth discussion, including presentations made on the relevant issues by the Director General, Inter-Services Intelligence, Director General Military Operations and Deputy Chief of Air Staff Operations, the Joint Session of Parliament resolved as under:

Condemned the US unilateral action in Abbottabad, which constitutes a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty;

Strongly asserted that unilateral actions, such as those conducted by the US forces in Abbottabad, as well as the continued drone attacks on the territory of Pakistan, are not only unacceptable but also constitute violation of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, international law and humanitarian norms and such drone attacks must be stopped forthwith, failing which the Government will be constrained to consider taking necessary steps including withdrawal of transit facility allowed to NATO/ISAF forces;

Determines that unilateral actions cannot advance the global cause of elimination of terrorism, and the people of Pakistan will no longer tolerate such actions and repeat of unilateral measures could have dire consequences for peace and security in the region and the world.

Reaffirmed the resolve of the people and Government of Pakistan to uphold Pakistan’s sovereignty and national security, which is a sacred duty, at all costs;

Affirmed the resolve of the people and state institutions of Pakistan to safeguard Pakistan’s national interests and strategic assets and, in this context, underscored that any action to the contrary will warrant a strong national response;

Expressed its deep distress on the campaign to malign Pakistan, launched by certain quarters in other countries without appreciating Pakistan’s determined efforts and immense sacrifices in combating terror and the fact that more than thirty thousand Pakistani innocent men, women and children and more than five thousand security and armed forces personnel had lost their lives, that is more than any other single country, in the fight against terror and the blowback emanating from actions of the NATO/ISAF forces in Afghanistan;

Called upon the Government to ensure that the principles of an independent foreign policy must be grounded in strict adherence to the principles of policy, as stated in Article 40 of the Constitution, the UN Charter, observance of international law and respect for the free will and aspirations of sovereign states and their peoples;

Further Called upon the Government to re-visit and review its terms of engagement with the United States, with a view to ensuring that Pakistan’s national interests are fully respected and accommodated in pursuit of policies for countering terrorism and achieving reconciliation and peace in Afghanistan;

Affirmed the importance of international cooperation for eliminating international terrorism, which can only be carried forward on the basis of a true partnership approach, based on equality, mutual respect and mutual trust;

Affirmed Also full confidence in the defence forces of Pakistan in safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and in overcoming any challenge to security, with the full support of the people and Government of Pakistan.

Reaffirmed the Resolution passed by the Joint Sitting of the Parliament on National Security held on 22 October 2008 and the detailed recommendations made by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security in April 2009.

Called upon the Government to appoint an independent Commission on the Abbottabad operation, fix responsibility and recommend necessary measures to ensure that such an incident does not recur. The composition/modalities of the Commission will be settled after consultations between the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition.
