Pakistan Polo Team in New Zealand

A six-member Pakistan team will be coming to Auckland, New Zealand,  to participate in the World Cup Polo Zone ‘D’ qualifiers, commencing from Monday.

Shah Qubilai Alam is leading the side. The other players are Raja Samiullah, Hissam Ali Hyder, Haseeb Minhas, Saqib Khan Khakwani and Ahmed Ali Tiwana.

Three officials – A. J. H. el Effendi (coach), Agha Murtaza Ali Khan (manager) and Lt Col Farhat Abbas (Pakistan Polo Association representative) – are accompanying the team.

Besides Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa are also participating in the competition.

The matches will be played on league basis and two top teams will qualify for the World Cup to be held in Mexico later this year.

Qubilai, who had participated in domestic season this year after the five-year ban imposed on him by the PPA was waived off by President Gen Pervez Musharraf, is looking in good form. He will have services of Hissam Ali Hyder and Raja Samiullah, who have been playing polo in England and Argentina.

Manager Agha Murtaza Ali Khan told Dawn that Pakistan had to face tough challenge from South Africa.

"South Africa’s players are inexperienced but they have shown excellent skills in recent matches, making their team a formidable side," Murtaza remarked.

He was of the view that Qubilai was still the best available choice to lead the squad due to his experience and skills.
Pakistan Association of New Zealand is holding a dinner for the team and would encourage all Pakistanis to go and give polo team a moral support on the ground.

Indian polo team scored an impressive 13쩍 - 11 win against its arch rivals Pakistan in its Federation of International Polo (FIP) World Cup Zone D match on Thursday in Clevedon, South Auckland. Pakistan started strong, dominating the scoring in the first chukka by 4 goals to one with Captain Shah Quibilai Alam scoring all their goals. India came alive in the second chukka, with their Captain Angard Kalaan finding some strong hitting form and together with Manupal Godara started to get India scoring. Pakistan scored early in chukka 2 to lead 5 -1 however, the Indians fought back to level the scores up at 5 all by the end of the chukka and then carried on their striking form to take the match. This loss puts Pakistan out of contention to qualify in the top two for the FIP World Finals in Mexico having lost three matches with only one to play. India: Angad Kalaan - 4, Tarun Sirohi - 5, Maupal Godara - 4
Pakistan: Hissam Ali Hyder - 7, Shah Qubilai -3, Raja Samiullah - 1,
