An Email from former President of Panz Shahid Azad Dear Billa It feels good to return to Sohni-Dharti after a long time. With reference to our telephonic conversation today,I am off the view that a joint effort to pressurize Tarana of stopping Pakistan bashing is need of the hour.Let us join hands and tell others -Pakiwis are solid like rock and can`t be abused. We all have done it before and we all will do it again. One of the important things is to send a barrage of emails to Trana at info@tarana.co.nz to show our anger and disatisfaction at what is happening at Tarana with reference to Pakistan. Please just write a few lines and see the how the pressure builds up.Business community should feel that they have to play a role in resolving the issue.Country and roots sometime mean more to us thatn any momentry business benefits or advertisement. They are also sons of the soil like other Pak-loving people. We expect PANZ to lead this from the front and make us proud of what we are.PANZ will find all of us in this struggle of maintaning our dignity and self-respect.Please find enclosed the copy of draft letter presented to Radio Tarana today morning.

Radio Tarana
Level - 2, 35 - 39 George St
Kingsland, ( off New North Rd )
Auckland. Attn: Robert Khan SUB: Protest Against Biased Programme This is with reference to comments made by Radio Tarna broad-caster Param Jeet while discussing a news item regarding Pakistan court proceedings in a rape case, The community members who listen to the radio channel have informed us that the broadcaster generalized the situation, creating an impression that majority of the girls are being raped in Pakistan. This has also been noted that the satiric approach and methodology adopted by the host continued to run through the entire programme. Such assertion or statement shows the intellectual level of the person in particular. Whenever we talk about percentages in a news organization we have to be very careful and alert about figures. As a representative of Pakistan community living in New Zealand, we strongly condemn the remarks made by Param-Jeet during her programme. We believe she acted against the rules of fairness and accuracy that are usually followed by radio-media. It clearly seems that she violated the broad-casting standards relating to social responsibility as well. This has naturally resulted in a strong condemnation within Pakistan community and generated anger against her ill-calculated conclusions. We strongly feel that an atmosphere of indirect vocal attacks on Pakistan, its society and people goes on through Radio Tarana after intervals of time. We have reasons to believe that our numerous applications about such incidents have gone un-noticed as the occurrence of negative portrayal seems continued and unabashed. Keeping in view the sensitive and fragile relationship between both the countries, Radio Tarana should have advised all of its hosts to strictly follow the purpose of establishing Radio Tarana that is placed on its web site as a guiding principle

"We endeavor to entertain, educate, inform, preserve & develop culture and foster mutual understanding between the different originating groups in the Indian Community, using the universal language of music, news, views, information and being mindful of the diverse interests, religious and ethnic origins of the audience we cater for." This is quite unfortunate that the above principles are not followed to their true spirit though Radio Tarana claims itself to be a voice of all Hindi and Urdu speaking people. This should also be noted that it is not the first time that the particular host is involved in such controversy. Pakistan community has also reacted against her comments in the past. It is quite disappointing that some of Radio Tarana staff have their own inclinations which they keep above the impartial standards for a news organization. No wishful thinking but only a strong internal accountability on behalf of Radio Tarana can set the things in right direction. As the said programme has deeply hurt the community, a special meeting of Pakistan Association of New Zealand was held on 22 March 2005. In a symbolic protest the community organization has decided to ban the entry of the particular programme host to all of its community functions with immediate effect. The aim is not to ridicule but to emphasize the importance of maintaining decent broad-casting standards. In addition the organization decided to submit the following for your kind consideration. Radio Tarana should take immediate action against irresponsible comments made by the programme host. Pakistani community owes an on-air as well as a written apology from the said broadcaster and the organization. 2-If Radio Tarana and its broadcaster fails to understand the mental agony and pain caused to Pakistan community, the organization would be compelled to take other legal measures including public protest before Radio Tarana building. The additional steps may involve strategies in alliance with Pak business community that provide considerable business to Radio Tarana. 3-We also suggest the establishment of Complaint Cell within Radio Tarna where the concerns on particular issues are dealt in a fast and amicable way, bringing a lively and ever-growing relationship between the radio and the people. 4-Keeping in view the sensitive issues, it will be appreciable to make arrangements where opinions of all the relevant parties are heard appropriately. This will also be in compliance with principle 4 of the broad-casting code. 5- We also request that provision of programme recording as soon as possible so that a detailed analysis could be made for your office and for other places if required. We hope you will take the above in positive spirit and make a reputation where Radio   Tarna becomes true to its noble objectives and a center of ethnic harmony. We assure you of our help and support in following these.       Sohail Khan   President Pakistan Association of New Zealand
