Two men in court over taxi stabbings, assault

Two taxi drivers have been arrested over an attack on three fare-dodging passengers in an Auckland suburb.

One of the fare dodgers was allegedly stabbed in his back and buttocks by a taxi driver who drove them to Avondale, about 10km west of the city centre, on Monday night.

Another was allegedly run down by a second taxi driver who tried to prevent the trio from getting away. The man's leg was broken and he received suspected internal injuries.

It is understood the fracas broke out over a taxi fare of less than $10.

The two men are still recovering in hospital.

Detective Sergeant James Pickering told NZPA two taxi drivers were arrested last night and jointly charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The men were due to appear in Auckland District Court today.

The three passengers in their 20 caught a taxi to Racecourse Parade in Avondale about 9pm on Monday but tried to run off without paying the driver.

Two of the men were found by two taxi drivers near a Shell Service Station on Ash St.

A third man was arrested by police for obtaining by deception and will appear in Auckland District Court on Monday.
