UN probe financing
Tuesday, February 10, 2009
The government of Pakistan has to deposit $1.5 million by this week as seed money for a 'fact-finding' mission into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. According to a rough estimate, a total of $30 million will be needed for the entire mission. As a national leader and a former two-time prime minister, I think we should find the facts behind her death. However, I think taxpayers' funds should not be used to finance the probe. I have a more practical solution.

All the members of the Bhutto family and all members of the PPP should sell some of their assets, both in Pakistan and abroad and generate money for this probe. If the money is still not generated, then the rich people of Pakistan must be voluntarily asked to contribute. If the money is still not generated, then the PPP should wait till such time that it has the money required to pay to the UN. But the poor people of Pakistan must not be made to pay.
