Degree forger arrested

JEDDAH: Police arrested on Friday an Arab man who would forge and sell MA and Ph.D. certificates from reputable foreign universities.

“An undercover policeman was assigned to investigate the matter. The policeman approached the forger pretending he wanted to buy a certificate,” Al-Madinah daily quoted Col. Misfer Al-Juaid, spokesman for Jeddah police, as saying.

He said the man would charge up to SR10,000 per certificate.

Police also searched the man’s home and found a computer that he would use to make the certificates, lists of the names of foreign universities, and dozens of fake certificates that had been stamped and signed but did not have any names on them.

“The forger was a professional. He could hack the computers of these universities and print out fake certificates,” said Al-Juaid.

On questioning, the man confessed to making fake certificates and charging people according to what type of certificate they wanted and the subject of the degree.

“The case has been transferred to the anti-counterfeiting department for further investigation,” said Al-Juaid.
