MADINAH: Municipality officials in Madinah raided a popular restaurant that allegedly served contaminated meat to its customers.

The restaurant was buying sick goats for a cheaper price and sometimes serving the meat of animals that had been dead for a long time.

The health department at the Madinah municipality conducted a number of surprise visits to a number of restaurants in the city to check their health standards and workers’ certificates.

Head of the Ohod municipality branch, Hamza Seebaih, confirmed the restaurant had been shut down. The workers in the restaurant are of Arab nationality and four of them had no health certificate or valid iqamas (residence permits).

He said the team inspected the workers’ residence at the back of the restaurant and found it had been turned into a slaughterhouse.

The team found sick and dead goats there. Most of the meat stored in the refrigerators was not fit for consumption, the team said, adding frozen chicken from unknown sources was also discovered.

The health team confiscated and destroyed the meat and the workers were detained pending further investigations
