PML-Q has right to form govt in Balochistan, says Shujaat * Party president says new candidate for CM to be announced within two days
QUETTA: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said on Thursday that his party had a right to form the government in Balochistan because it won a majority in the province.
He was talking to journalists on Thursday after a two-hour meeting of the PML-Q candidates elected to the Balochistan Assembly. PML-Q Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Syed accompanied him.
“Now that we have won a majority of the seats in Balochistan, people’s votes should be respected and we should be invited to form the government in Balochistan,” he said. Shujaat had to rush to Quetta after differences emerged between top PML-Q provincial leaders on the controversial nomination of a comparatively unknown local leader, Mir Jaffar Khan Mandokhel, as the party’s parliamentary leader in the provincial assembly. Several senior leaders said they had not been taken into confidence before the decision was made.
New candidate: The PML-Q president said the party members had mandated him to decide the party’s candidate for Balochistan chief minister. “I have been assured that any decision that I will make ... will be accepted wholeheartedly by the party members,” he said in his brief interaction with reporters.
Shujaat said the name of the PML-Q candidate for Balochistan chief minister would be announced “in 24 to 48 hours”. Earlier on Thursday, Mushahid Hussain said all party decisions would be made while keeping the interests of the country and that of Balochistan supreme.
“It’s incorrect that we did not visit Balochistan earlier deliberately. Actually, the provincial leadership of the party requested us to halt our trip until things clarified,” he said. Mushahid said there were no differences in the PML-Q in Balochistan.
PML-Q Balochistan President Jam Mohammad Yousaf, nominated parliamentary leader Mir Jaffar Khan Mandokhel and former federal minister Sardar Yar Mohammad Rind attended the meeting. Rind is a frontrunner for PML-Q’s candidate for chief minister. Rind had reservations over the nomination of Mandokhel as the party’s parliamentary leader, but told reporters he respected Mandokhel “as a good friend and a brother”.
“I was not taken into confidence while making Mandokhel as the parliamentary leader but I won’t oppose him,” he said.
