National's tax swindle Budget

National called their budget a "tax switch". Actually it's a tax swindle.
National's tax cuts make New Zealand less fair - the only real winners from this budget were the very highest income earners. I'm writing to ask you to consider making a donation to Labour so that we can continue the fight for fairer tax and a fairer society.
          Fairness matters.
It's not fair that the vast bulk of Kiwis are going to be paying higher GST and higher prices so that the wealthiest New Zealanders can get huge tax reductions. It's not fair that fifteen per cent of National's tax cuts goes to the top 1% of earners.
National's Cabinet Ministers get around $140 extra a week - compared to only $3 a week for those on the minimum wage.
          We don’t think that's fair.
National has gone to great lengths to hide this unfairness by claiming that no one is made worse off. But that's not true either. Most New Zealanders’ tax cuts will be wiped out by 6% inflation before they even get to the check out. Here's what that means:
With such a large inflation rise a person on the average wage will end up paying $45 more each week for the same goods and services.
If you're on the average wage, in total, you'll be $30 a week worse off under this budget.
Someone on $70,000 will be $45 a week worse off after inflation.
That's bad enough, but to add insult to injury, National has funded its tax swindle by massive increases to borrowing. And we all know that borrowing for tax cuts just doesn't make sense - it's economically reckless.
But it didn't have to be like this.
National had the opportunity to deliver a Budget that was fair to all Kiwis. A Budget for the many not the few. But they didn’t. They had the chance to produce a Budget that invested in the future. A Budget that promoted a modern, smart economy with better jobs and higher wages. But they didn’t.
Zubair, if you care about making New Zealand a fairer place might you consider making a donation to Labour? You can make a secure online donation here. The election campaign is less than 18 months away and our opponents will be better funded than ever.
Your donation will be put to good use - fighting for fairness against an opponent who has given the wealthiest a windfall - a windfall paid for by increasing costs on hardworking Kiwi families whose budgets are already stretched.
Thank you again for your support.
Kind regards,
Chris Flatt
General Secretary, New Zealand Labour Party
PS. National's tax swindle budget was about the few rather than the many. Can you help Labour fight for fairness and make a secure online donation right now? Every dollar counts as we build towards the campaign.

Government must demand answers from Israel

Labour leader Phil Goff today condemned the action taken by Israeli forces against an aid flotilla bound for Gaza and the resulting loss of life.

“I support moves that are already underway for a full investigation to ensure those responsible are held to account for their disproportionate use of force,” Phil Goff said.

“The blockade being imposed by Israel is having unacceptable humanitarian effects.

“I agree with the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon who has said the blockade creates unacceptable suffering, hurts forces of moderation and empowers extremists.

“Israel’s Ambassador to New Zealand must be asked to account for the enforcement of the blockade into Gaza and the disproportionate use of force against those in the aid flotilla.

“A resolution to the conflict in the Middle East will not come about unless there is a readiness to compromise on Israel’s part.

“The international community acknowledges Israel needs secure and stable borders, but Palestinians also deserve a better standard of life, socially and economically, for themselves their children and future generations.

“The Government needs to take a strong stance against Israel’s disproportionate use of force in this incident.”
