MULTAN: A police constable of Rahim Yar Khan city, Liaquat Ali, aged 35, and a student in Mandi Bahauddin were among the 23 people reported dead in a heat wave during the past 24 hours.

“At least 23 people have died of heat stroke in Punjab during the past 24 hours and more than 80 fainted in the Punjab province,” said a spokesman for the Health Management Information System, Shahid Pervez, on Thursday. “The death toll has climbed to 73 in the past 48 hours in Punjab,” confirmed the Edhi centre and the health authorities. Four died in Lalamusa and Chiniot, two each in Faisalabad, Jhaverian, Kamonke, Bhera, Multan and one each in Sillanwali, Jhang, Daira Din Panah, Chichawatni, Mandi Bahauddin, Kasur and Talagang. On Wednesday, at least 50 people, including 11 in Multan, have died during the past 24 hours. Multan and adjacent areas experienced the second hottest day when mercury shot up to 49 degree Celsius. “As many as 50 people have died of heat stroke in Punjab during the past 24 hours while more than 300 more fainted in the province. Multan is the hottest city,” said Dr Javed Asghar, the Health Advisor.
