Aisam wins doubles crown in Uzbekistan

LAHORE: Aisamul Haq Qureshi with Justin Bower of South Africa won the 2003 doubles title in Fergana defeating Kazakhstan’s Alexey Kedriouk and Ukraine’s Orest Tereshchuk 3-6, 7-6, (7/0), 6-4. The International Challenger Trophy was the year’s biggest event of Uzbekistan.

Aisam has become the first Muslim tennis player in Uzbekistan’s tennis history to lift the trophy at the hard courts of the City Council Complex of Fergana, said a message received here Tuesday.

Earlier in the semi final, Aisam and partner defeated the Swiss duo Yves Allegro and Marco Chiudinelli 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. In the quarters, they beat the local heroes Oleg Ogorodov and Vadim Kutsenko 6-4, 6-3.

The victory brought Aisam’s 21st international tennis title. With a doubles international ranking of 90, Aisam is the first Pakistani ever to be among the top 100 of the world tennis.

Chakwali star Aisam ul Haq Qureshi has it roots in Chakwal , His grand father, Kh Iftakhar Ahmad (NANA) was born in Chakwal, he was number one tennis player of Indo-Pak in mid 1945, it is good to see that Aisam is keeping the family tradition alive
